Has anyone else completely given up snacking?

I know my extra weight has crept on due to the crappy snacks I indulge in (crisps, biscuits, cake, choc, crisps and more crisps. I think I'm an addict)
I think I could lose lots of weight is I give up snacking and have 3 proper meals a day and 1 small organised healthy snack mid afternoon.

I want to feel hunger and look forward to my healthy tasty meal.

Has anyone doen this? How did it go?
Does anone want to do this?

Yes, I gave up snacking completely when I started cutting down on the shite I was eating.

I suppose it depends on your metabolism, but I don't personally thinking eating little and often works. I just have breakfast mid morning, a late lunch and dinner, and don't eat anything in between.

Mibnd you it goes with being low carb - I think the problem before was having a mid morning slump after a carby breakfast, so had to eat something.

In any case I am finding it easy.

cyb · 15/02/2012 17:45

When I have got the willpower to stop snacking the weight falls off,as I dont eat that much at mealtimes

I agree with GetOrf, little adn often doesnt work forme, as I eat little and often, then 3 square meals

GetOrfMoiiLand · 15/02/2012 17:49

Exactly, I would have something snacky mid afternoon, it would make me more ravenous and I would attack a huge meal with even more gusto than usual.

No snacking is the way to go. Even if you only have boring as fuck snacks, like oatcakes, 3 snacks a day would still add up to something ridiculous like 300 cals a day. I would rather have a little more for breakfast or whatever.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2012 17:51

Sounds like willpower is required. I would need to have no crappy snacky foods in the house whatsoever.

Wiifitmama · 15/02/2012 17:51

I don't snack. I have late-ish breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lots of herbal teas and other hot drinks in between. I have lost 100 pounds (not just through lack of snacking of course). If you eat the right foods at mealtimes, you shouldn't need a snack.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 15/02/2012 17:53

100lbs!

Good lord, well done.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2012 17:55

That is brilliant Wiifit.

girlsyearapart · 15/02/2012 17:56

I have (sort of) have had no biscuits crisps chocolate bars or pastries for 4.5 weeks now.
Have had the odd hot cross bun, malt loaf slice, toast as snacks & low cal hot chocolate & muller light yoghurt.

Apart from that am having porridge for breakfast soup for lunch fruit/yoghurt & a mainly balanced evening meal.

If I have biscuits or chocolate I can't stop at one I cant stop so I have to completely deprive myself!

Have lost all my baby weight from dc4 who is ten weeks now and I'm in size 12 stuff & am in jeans that haven't fitted for over 2 years.

I find it fairly easy doing it this way I can't do the whole 'one square of dark chocolate a night' thing they tell you to do in the diet mags

Can't really go without any snacks bf ing makes me hungry!

girlsyearapart · 15/02/2012 17:58

Wow wiifit you go girl (pom poms)

dottyhenson · 15/02/2012 17:59

I lost about 3 stones last year through mainly stopping snacking & going low carbs. But I did start eating lots more high fat proteins ( am veggie) at meals because I want my meals to be super tasty & healthy. I never called it a diet & although I am not trying to lose weight anymore, it did change my eating habits & I don't waste calories anymore.

Mallinky · 15/02/2012 18:28

100lbs!! Shock wiifit thats fab. Well done.

I think this is the way to go for me as I'm in the same 'little and often doesn't work for me' camp. So no mid morning, all afternoon, all evening snacking for me.

Dottyhenson - care to share any of your meal ideas? I'm veggie too and really struggle.

Fluffy1234 · 15/02/2012 19:11

I stopped snacking last Easter and lost a stone in about 12 weeks. Then I cut portion size and most carbs as I had got cravings under control and lost another 46 pounds. So went from 13 and a half stone to 9 stone 3 pounds in 8 months.

Fluffy1234 · 15/02/2012 19:12

Well done wiifit.

Mallinky · 15/02/2012 19:23

Well done Fluffy

You've all inspired me and I know I'm doing the right thing but I also know its going to be a struggle too.

I stopped in November and have lost about 16lbs. Just today I thought 'perhaps I"ll start a thread about no snacking' as the last week (tofm) have given in and had a scone here and there, and fear that it will be all too easy to revert back.

I've also upped the exercise too. I haven't called it a diet but am really chuffed to have got rid of a little padding, and partly I'm just delighted to be able to resist biscuits/crisps etc, after years of just feeling like I had to eat them.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 15/02/2012 19:42

I have done this through weightwatchers. My snacks are fruit and I eat three decent meals a day with occasionally cereal for supper. I feel a lot better and have lost weight. I do have to meal plan more but that saves me money.

Mallinky · 15/02/2012 19:43

TheEndless I need to get to where you are - able to resist food as I feel like I have to eat it too. Like I'm an addict.

btw, the first few days were hard, partly because I felt like I was concentrating so much, but definitely got easier and you get used to tolerating hunger rather than just satiating it straight away...

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2012 19:48

Can you still have snacks in the house though? Pre-teen son here so he's eating everything in sight and not putting on an ounce.

TheEndlessArete · 15/02/2012 19:48

There are still some foods that I find harder to resist - I can tolerate an open packet of biscuits or choccies in the house, but if there is an open bag of kettle chips...eek, that's still tough, so at the moment I'm trying not to have any of that in the house - although I'd love to get to the point where I could have it around but just not eat it...

shineoncubiczirconia · 15/02/2012 19:50

Yes. I had ds nearly 6 months ago and decided while still pregnant that I'd try and lose the weight steadily, sensibly but from the beginning of his life, not 6 months in after weeks of sitting around eating my bodyweight in gingerbread each day. First time round I'd been fairly depressed, eaten for comfort and not gained weight but remained overweight and unhappy. I found out that losing the weight and getting fit made a massive difference to my mental wellbeing and so decided with dc2 that I'd try and sort it out sooner. Not because of how I looked but to feel positive and healthy.

I had a repeat emcs so couldn't get into exercise straight away so decided to cut out snacks instead. I have found what helps is to think that yes I can eat what I want but only as a treat and what happens is that it feels like a treat. So from September to Christmas I didn't snack, cut out choc, sweets, biscuits, crisps etc and come Christmas Day pudding and some good quality chocolate tasted bloody lovely. Ditto on my birthday (NYE) I had a brilliant and much looked forward to pudding. And if tomorrow I wanted to have something then I would and that mindset, knowing it isn't banned but is just a treat now is so much easier than craving something I 'can't' have.

Anyway, I added exercise back in when ds was 8 weeks and I've carried on just eating good, healthy food, no dieting but no mindless, empty calories and I've lost all of the baby weight (2.5 stones), feel fit and healthy, am wearing my clothes, feel good about my energy levels and am enjoying the baby stage which I never, ever thought would happen. And I look okay too.

It's actually fairly easy once you start doing it. Because you start feeling good, losing weight and seeing a treat as a treat. Your body thanks you for it too I think. None of that crashing and craving a quick pick me up. Your body just learns how to feel proper hunger and also feels sustained instead of that post dinner chocolate desperation seizing you daily.

Mallinky · 15/02/2012 19:52

I don't think I could ever find the strength to resist an open bag of kettle chips!!! Shock

We still have it in the house. We got given all sorts of stuff at Christmas. And dh is one of those eat what he wants, still look bloody good on it types. So we currently have 2 tins of shortbread, 3 selection boxes, a jar of sweets, two boxes of chocolate chip cookies, 3 giant bars of cadbury's fruit and nut, 1 bar of galaxy, a yard of jaffa cakes and 5 lindt reindeers. It's very empowering to realise I don't have to eat them. I'm considering giving them to the church for them to take on their soup run. Actually I AM going to do that. They're just sitting there.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2012 19:57

I really want to do this now. I have done WW twice and lost weight but I can't do it again. My snacking is out of control TBH. I do walk 3 miles a day though.
