CSIRO total wellbeing diet anyone?

G'day
it being Australia Day this week and this diet being Australian I have started it today.

It has had great reviews and suggests 300g of lean protein a day which is pretty good for a barbequeing nation. I've only got 4kilos to lose but want to do the 12 week plan to get healthier.

Has anyone else tried it or would like to join me?

it's pretty good so far; steamed beans, cabbage and a beef casserole with capsicum and mushrooms and red wine sauce with frozen fruit yogurt for afters

and another 400g this morning

please will someone humour me on this? Or I will have to start a " MN isn't as friendly as it used to be to lard arses: thread.

Come on someone, I dip in to the GI threads and say well done, I'm not a demanding MNer, really, I don't ask for much. I don't ask about re-freezing veal or what kind of drugget for the back stairs I should buy, I just want a bit of support on the dieting like the rest of you get.

I'll support you! How are you doing today? Well done for the weight loss so far. How did you find this diet? Is it available over here? Is there a possiblity that no one else on mumsnet know what this diet is?

bran · 31/01/2006 09:20

I've never heard of it SW, sounds like pretty good weightloss on it though, well done. It can sometimes be slow when you only have a few pounds to lose but you seem to be loosing at a good pace.

What sort of diet is it? Do you feel healthier as well as lighter?

I really must get myself back on a diet, I felt much better when I wasn't eating any sugar but I do love it so.

suzywong · 31/01/2006 09:21

oh thanks Carmenere

here is a to the CSIRO diet . It stands for Commonwealth Scientific Institute and Research Organisation.

It is basically a low-ish carb and high protein and low fat, but it has a menu plan and weekly shopping list which is very easy to follow. And lots of exercise too.

I started at 74 kilos and want to get to 68 over 12 weeks

are you dieting? or are you feeling about the right size?

hello bran
god it's amazing what a bit of begging and emotional blackmail will do.

yes I feel much healthier, there are 300g of lean meat/fish to be eaten a day which fits in very well with the Aussie BBQ season. Although the diet has been panned for being hand in glove, or hoof in glove, with the Livestock commission. But this is a meat loving nation.

Hi Suzy, I don't think that people were ignoring you, these days I find that the active conversation list moves so fast that I completely miss loads of interesting threads. I'll just have to adjust my day so that I can check in every 20 mins or so.

Do you miss having carbs with your evening meal? I suspect that I would really fall off this diet in a big way at dinner time as I'm one of those people who can be good all day but get horrendous munchies in the evening.

bran · 31/01/2006 09:34

DS has just woken, so I'm off to get breakfast and out to play group, so that's another couple of hours of Mumsnet that I'll miss. Damn.

yoyo · 31/01/2006 09:37

SW - this was serialised in The Times last year ang had glowing reports. I bought the book as I thought DH would fancy it given the protein allowance. Sadly it is still on the shelf as my birthday then Christmas scuppered a serious attempt at the plan. I will follow your progress with interest as the recipes do sound really good. I need to stop thinking about warm comfort food in order to embrace it though (unlike you at the moment!).

suzywong · 31/01/2006 09:44

well you can swap your carb units around, so have an open sandwich instead of a two slicer for lunch and then a small portion of rice or noodles or bread with dinner

Oh yoyo you really should join in. It is very healthful. I make adjustments, I always have my usual breakfast of porridge, blueberries, walnuts brown sugar and greek yogurt - moderate portion of course. And I eat frozen yogurt full fat lolliies instead of tinned fruit and custard, as any sensible person would. And if I really really fancy something in the evenings I'll have a tiny piece. And I melt dark chocolate into my 250ml of milk with a shot of rum for cocoa. How are your early mornings these days? Has the little blighter started rising at a decent hour? Mine has. 7.15 this morning - whoopee!! And of course the better you sleep the faster your metabolism

I will reread the book at the weekend as my week is rather hectic and DH is ill so now I have 4 children to deal with! All the meals appealed to me actually and it isn't that different to what I would eat normally (apart from wine and the crappy things I eat after a couple of glasses). I seem to recall quite a restriction on fruit which would be a problem for me - am I right? Actually I seenm to recall no alcohol too (or am I confusing it with another diet?). Keep us up to date as it is always encouraging to hear success stories - I don't have masses to lose 0.5 to 1 st.

DS is much better thanks. He is in a bed and out of nappies! He sleeps through about 4 nights a week which is amazing although he did get me up a few times last night. We even have to wake him up now and I never thought I'd say that. Glad things have improved for you too.

suzywong · 31/01/2006 11:00

great isn't it? the small boy thing

You can have 300ml or two standard drinks a week - but I just have one glass every other day. And two pieces of fruit.

Right now we are tucking in to T bone steak, french fries - half a potato each, asparagus, grilled mushrooms and sauted brussels and gravy - stock and cornflour, not something I would habitually make.

I got two low fat creme caramels for afters - again not something I would normally buy but what the hell.

Sounds like your goal is easily reachable.

How goes the diet SW? Have been trying to catch you all week. We are on half term and I shall be reading my book later.

Look at ivillage.co.uk as they are running a "plan" following CSIRO at the moment. Only saw it briefly (they keep emailing me for some reason) but thought I'd take a closer look when I get the time.

Hope the pounds are continuing to fall off.

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 12:42

Hello FattyChops, how are you doing ? I would have supported you had I seen this thread, I'm very supportive, me. For myself, I seem to have given up dieting and am thinking of investing in larger trousers.

yoyo · 11/02/2006 12:47

SorenLorensen - Have you recently changed your name? Don't do the bigger trousers - there will be no going back!

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 12:48

Hi yoyo - yes, it's marthamoo.

I know...I know...I got rid of all my bigger clothes when I lost 3 stone. But I seem to have lost any willpower I once possessed.

yoyo · 11/02/2006 13:04

Three stone is fantastic!! What diet did you follow? Now that the days will be getting brighter your willpower might return (it is the thought of more revealing summer clothes that usually spurs me on).

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 18:44

WeightWatchers - none of this namby pamby Australian nonsense Oh I hope so - I do hate this time of year so I may get inspired again when the weather improves. Note I said 'when' and not 'if'!
