Porridge ideas please

bought a packet of porridge oats today as everyone seems to rave about iron here... Assume I make it with water and not milk?

Not had porridge for a long time but I seem to remember it being quite tasteless, someone on another thread mentioned cinnamon which seems a nice idea.

Also bought almonds, honey and a pot of munchy seeds. Thought i could maybe add a sprinkling of those.

Any other ideas would be great x

I make mine with soya milk (I don't get why everyone thinks milk is the enemy for weight loss).. makes it nice and creamy. I can't stomach it made with water.

I add a spoonful of honey and a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg. Gorgeous!

I like raisins in mine, I make it the night before and they swell up and get really juicy and sweet. grated apple and cinnamon is nice, and I was just pondering the possibility of orange zest and cranberries?

dinkystinky · 01/02/2012 18:15

I make mine with water then stir in some low fat flavoured yoghurt - it gives it flavour and creaminess

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 01/02/2012 18:15

Mmm, I've got to try this grated apple people keep mentioning....

Quaker Oat sachets for me! Original is very nice as is the golden syrup one. The raspberry one is to be avoided! Add skimmed milk to it and pop in the microwave for 2 minutes. Really filling.

UltimateHumungosaur · 01/02/2012 18:28

How do you make the night before ? Do you let it go old and reheat? Is that with water.

Thanks for these ideas :)

semi skimmed milk and bunged in the microwave

have been known (when no one was around) to break up chocolate digestives into it - but I'm now a reformed character

ouryve · 01/02/2012 18:34

I make mine with soya milk - only because ordinary milk (even lactofree) and my guts don't always see eye to eye first thing in the morning.

Making it with water is ridiculous, unless you make it very thick and then add milk, because you are missing out an important nutritional component of the porridge. By making it with milk, you are adding protein to it, which means it helps you to feel full for longer and are less likely to have a mid morning sugar crash.

I generally have mine with sliced banana on top. Strawberries are nice too, but I only do that when I have them in my garden.

maresedotes · 01/02/2012 18:35

Now I want mine with chocolate digestives in it!

Sparklingblue · 01/02/2012 18:38

Quaker oat sachets always seem to turn out better for me than big box of porridge - no idea why. I have it with yeo valley compote (rhubarb and strawberry). T'is truly delicious!

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 01/02/2012 18:41

Yes, it's lovely with chopped banana....

NannyR · 01/02/2012 18:45

I make mine with a half cup of oats, half cup of milk and half cup of water. Add a pinch of salt, sprinkle of cinnamon, spoonful of ground nuts (for extra protein) and a couple of chopped dates. Microwave for about two minutes, really tasty and keeps you going for hours.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 01/02/2012 18:45

I get frozen fruit (blueberries, raspberries and strawberries) and plop them in a couple of minutes before it's ready, then a tiny bit of maple syrup. Grated apple and cinnamon is lovely too. I always make mine with milk. I always find Quakers golden syrup one much too sweet.

Hathall · 01/02/2012 18:51

I make mine with water and a splash of regular milk.
Sometimes I have grated apple and cinnamon, sometimes with a drizzle of honey or sprinkle of brown sugar but mostly as it is.

I absolutely love the Alpen nut porridge though. Its amazing, filling and around 140 cals I think.

Grumpla · 01/02/2012 18:55

One cup porridge oats. One cup milk. One cup water.

If you like, you can mix it up and leave it overnight for a creamier texture as the oats go softer, but I rarely bother.

Stir it over a medium heat until it thickens.

I like it with chopped bananas, or stewed fruit (plums and apples very nice!) or finely grated raw apple plus cinnamon & nutmeg, or a big dollop of jam.

Deeeeelish! Smile

sunshineoutdoors · 01/02/2012 19:00

I made 6 month old dd half water made porridge and half apple purée (chopped apple in pan with a bit of water cooked until soft and blended, mixed together with cinnamon on top. It tasted lovely I'm going to make enough for me next time too.

jellibelli · 01/02/2012 19:29

I have it made with semi skimmed. I make it the night before and leave it overnight in the oven so it's all ready to go when I come down a bit late in the morning. At the moment I am part way through a tin of prunes which are sweet and scrummy, sometimes I have mixed berries or if nothing else is handy I have a huge dollop of jam.

Going to try the apple and cinnamon suggestion next though, sounds delicious..

SofaKingOld · 01/02/2012 19:42

I make mine with water then add about 15ml of double cream, a handful of berries and a small amount of golden linseed.

I might try the grated apple and cinnamon now - sounds lovely.

UltimateHumungosaur · 02/02/2012 12:03

Thank you all, made this morning with milk, half a grated apple, sprinkling of cinnamon, drizzle of honey and a tablespoon of the munchy seeds. Was lovely, was so surprised Blush

I always do 1 part porridge oats to 3 parts liquid - so depending on whether I'm slimming or not, i adjust the amount of milk and water : eg 2 cups water one semi- skimmed milk,or half water half milk . When I'm doing kids porridge I use all milk .
then I add brown sugar and extra cold milk and maybe chopped bannana .
It definitely sets you up for the day !
