In your opinion, which is best after low carbing?

I have been low carbing and well to be honest it's just not suiting me. I am tempted to join a sw class around the corner, or ww?
I have done ww before and got to gold but on the old points.

My head is in a whirl with all the diets on offer. I just want something sustainable long term.

So which, in your opinion is best for after low carbing?
ww
sw
myfitness pal
low gi (would have to buy a book)
Rosemary (I have done this also, years ago but no class near to me)

Any help appreciated.

Low GI is healthy and sustainable, although you will also need to be v conservative with your carb portions and stick to wholemeal version of everything. It taught me what a portion of carbs should look like though, which has meant my weight doesn't fluctuate much at all. If you really struggled with cutting down carbs then you may struggle at bit with it, but ultimately, not eating big piles of bread and pasta is def a good thing. I would recommend it.

Thanks notyummy.
I can do low carb just found that when I eat something with carbs, it just goes on double, so any weight loss is gone and find this too disheartening.
I would like to be able to eat brown rice and brown bread so low Gi may be for me. Did you follow a certain diet?

I have just eaten for brekkie, 42g All bran with muiller light strawb yoghurt and a banana. It's the first carby brekkie I have had for ages and to be honest, loved it.

I had the original LOw GI book (I think if you google it is the main one that come up) which is very understandable. Basically food is categorised as red, amber or green and I think you are supposed to stick with green food mainly to begin with. Mostly lots of salads/non starchy veg with protein. From memory you can have one slice of wholemean bread a day (?) and v small portions of pasta/rice. It has lists of the glycemic index of foods and suggests what you may want to have. Typical ideas might be porridge with skimmed milk, 'open' sandwich with chicken and salad etc. Very accessible.

Thanks notyummy. I will have a look, thanks for the info.

I can't do very low carb either - I get all dizzy and faint.
For long term sustainability I am finsing sw good. It does tend to reduce your carbs, but not so low it affects me. I feel it is teaching me what a good diet looks like. I'm losing weight steadily, too.

Thanks cardibach. I am quite intrigued by sw. Everyone does always seem to rate it. However I am not great at portion control.

I have just worked out the cals on myfitness for my brekkie and it came in at 320, this seems a lot doesn't it for breakfast?

Sounds alright to me tbh. DEpends on how many you are aiming for though (i.e how much you have to lose) DH made me poached eggs and smoked haddock on Saturday for breakfast and that was 300 calories and kept me full up for ages. Was delicious!

alfiemama · 30/01/2012 10:57

Thanks notyummy. I was aiming for 1200 according mfp, I thought I would check on cals just to see how much I am eating. I have also just checked the pro points it worked out at 10 eeeeek that sounds very high. However with ww I am used to the old point system so perhaps it isn't very high. Now only have 16 left for the day.

Moderate carbs - all of low GI variety and use myfitnesspal to monitor calories.

My diet is generally 35% protein, 45% carb and 20% fat so not low carb but moderate carb. Even 50% carb 30% protein would still be moderate carb.

alfiemama · 30/01/2012 12:32

Thanks foreverondiet.
Can you set your mfp to this? Sounds like a good plan.

Just out of interest would the new ww not already have worked this out with their points system.

I really don't want to point but as I have used this in the past and lost weight, perhaps I just have to bite the bullet and accept pointing is for me.

Forgive lack of question marks, little one distracted me.

alfiemama I too am rubbish at portion control. The good thing with SW is that you can have whatever size portion you like as long as it is the right stuff. I am finding that my appetite is decreasing anyway, though.
I don't work for SW by the way ;)

foreverondiet · 30/01/2012 15:26

Yes, I have set myfitnesspal up 35%/45%/20% - under custom.

My carbs mainly come from dairy, fruit, veggies (including starchy like sweet potato / parnsip etc) pulses, nuts (only 25g per day max!)

I do sometimes add grains (like brown rice / quinoa / buckwheat / barley) in small quantities to evening meal.

Have never done weightwatchers!

alfiemama · 30/01/2012 16:22

Thanks forever. I will try and change mine.

Thanks cardibach. I just worry that I have the off switch to be able to stop eating.
