Dp bought me some 1kg hand weights yesterday from Sport's direct, only cost £5.98. Strangely they were sold in 1s??? Why would anyone buy 1 hand weight?

So happy not to have to use tins Grin It's the little things isn't it? Wink

I'm convinced Jillian was impressed Wink

Sorry I don't think she's be that impressed with 1kg!

[Argos sell 2 1kg weights for £5, so not that great a bargain].

CuriousMama · 17/01/2012 19:50

Well I'm impressed foreveronadiet. Thanks for the encouragement Hmm

Oh and by the way, diets don't work.

I expect Jillian was very proud of you CM.

shrinkingnora · 17/01/2012 19:53

I am. I can only manage beans when I shred.

CuriousMama · 17/01/2012 19:54

Thanks shrinkingnora Smile I thought beans were fairly heavy until I started with these. You do feel the difference. Better to start small. I know loads who go for it hell for leather then burn out.

the davina weights (3 pairs of wierd odd weights, 0.68, 1.13, 2.27) are reduced to £9 at argos so that's quite good

ReduceRecycleRegift · 17/01/2012 20:11

p.s. foreverondiet what the hell? Hmm, Jillian is v proud CM Wink (but she also thinks I'm strong and there isn't anything I can't do Grin )

CuriousMama · 17/01/2012 20:35

Oh I know she did mention how strong you were RRR Wink

Thanks for Argos tip although may just get 2kg weights as am sure I'll be on to them soon.

Well done Curiousmama!

I'm sure that Jillian would be v impressed Grin

My two penneth worth - definitely keep your eye out for heavier sets of weights on sale as you'll be finding you want to move up before too long, you'll surprise yourself Smile (remember: you are strong!)

CuriousMama · 17/01/2012 21:35

Thanks both of you Smile Yes she certainly drills it into you doesn't she Grin I'm only on level 1 but am actually enjoying it. I walk a lot up and down the cliffs with the pooch but this is good all round exercise.

Yup I know diets don't work, need to change long term eating habits. Have maintained weight since June on that basis.

Ok maybe I was a little Hmm but it never occurred to me that there would be any point in using such light weights, eg my 65 year old MIL is doing shred as she has osteoporosis and she is using 1kg.... I am currently on 4kg for most of the exercises.

Also 2 x 1kg weights anyway are only £5 in argos so its not as if the OP got such a bargain.

CuriousMama · 18/01/2012 09:26

Well done you foreverondiet. Only did you realise bigger weights add bulk? Just saying. Lighter with more reps burn calories.

Yes you can get a cheaper version of weights, I looked. But mine were reduced from £11.99. They have a lovely feel to them, much better quality.

Now if you have nothing positive to day then please do one.

CuriousMama - bigger weights do not add bulk (Unless you are a man or have a lot of testosterone!)
Foreveronadiet did not mean any harm by her comment. She has lot of amazing hints & tips re exercise & diet - she's been doing the shred now for over a year.
I started on the shred with 1.5KGs & have increased the size of the weights over the year.
It's best everyone starts where they feel comfortable - but don't forget to test yourself every now & again that's how you get the best results.

Good luck all.

CuriousMama · 18/01/2012 13:37

Her first comments irked me. I'm new to shred so saying Jillian wouldn't be that impressed by my 1kg was arsey imo.

I can run up cliffs though, so not that unfit. It's using the different muscle groups that make it get you a bit out of breath and made me feel great. I love the Shred and have already recommended it to a few friends. Dp tried it and said I'm wise to start on the 1kg, he's much fitter than me but did find the quick succesion of changes gets you a bit.

Tbh I'm not at all obsessed with fitness I incorporate it into my life, it isn't my life though. Maybe some people just take it much more seriously?

Anyway I only started this thread to be light hearted, think I'll leave it now.

forever on a diet, I started on less than 1k (the smallest davina ones) and IMO its better to start on the lowest and stay motivated by progressing up than to start off on the big 'uns . I'm now on day 7 and up to the biggest davina ones (which to be fair aren't that big by normal weight set standards!) and TBH if I didn't have the weight progression to get through during the 10 days I think I'ld start to get bored. When I do L2 I plan to start on the low weights and do 3 days of them, then 3 days of middle, then 3 days of big. If you always do the same think your body stops responding as well doesn't it?

Its better to stick to the program for 30 days with little or no weights than to go hell for leather at the start and get bored/sore/demotivated!

foreverondiet · 18/01/2012 19:14

No I will not get bulk from 4kg weights doing 30 day shred!!! There are far too many reps for that. 4kg weights burn more calories than 1kg weights. Even aside from the issue of not being male (!) to build bulk need to do 6 or 7 reps of something as heavy as you can lift.

I started with 2kg because I didn't want to spend money on 1kg weights that would be too light very quickly.

re: challenging body, I have now got ripped in 30 but I never do the same workout for more than a week, so alternate around. Push myself on different exercises with the bigger weights or add weights even if Jillian doesn't eg for boxing always use weights.
