WHy on earth are you eating so few calories? 500 calories is a starvation diet and you will be doing untold damage to your body.

WobblyWomble · 10/01/2012 13:19

my plan is to eat 500 to give my wobbly a bit of a boost to lose weight then very slowly im going to creep up to 900/1000

whats a normal-ish amount? when i type in google different sites keep giving different amounts. im soooo confused :/

You need to eat at least 1200 cals a day or your body will go straight into starvation mode and you won't lose - and when your intake DOES go up you'll put loads back on!

WobblyWomble · 10/01/2012 13:21

ah...

Trust me, you're being incredibly foolish. Your body isn't stupid. If you do this, it will make losing weight even harder, it will not let go of a single pound while it thinks you're starving it. I still have a shitty metabolism from an eating disorder and tbh it's a big regret- I have to watch what I eat religiously for the rest of my life as my body is far more keen to put on weight than lose it based on being so starved at that time.

Tonksforthememories · 10/01/2012 13:23

You need to find out how many calories needed to maintain your current weight, then shave 500 off that. Any fewer than 1500ish calories will result in your body storing anything you eat as it will think you are starving. You will burn muscle, not fat, and muscle is what you need to keep your metabolic rate up.

WobblyWomble · 10/01/2012 13:24

i was going to ask the nurse at my GP's about healthy diet plan, but she is about 20+ stone and i dont think i could take her advice seriously.

i know that sounds extremely mean, i just need a serious talking to!

Try using livestrong.com or myfitnesspal. There are apps if you want them, log everything you eat (or are considering eating) to keep track.

Ffff is right though, 500-600 calories is insanity. You won't be able to stick to it for any length of time without either making yourself ill or losing willpower, it will also be counterproductive longer term - any weight lost will return rapidly and you will have screwed up your metabolism along the way so you will then have to eat less than you do now to put on weight. 1300 calories is usually a decent starting point for sensible, sustainable weight loss. How much are you trying to lose?

WobblyWomble · 10/01/2012 13:25

thanks for replying tho, it can be so lonely trying to lose weight :(

Sleepwhenidie · 10/01/2012 13:35

Well it's a sensible poster you've put up but not an ideal approach! 5stone should easily be achievable in a year though, at a rate of 1.5lbs per week on average, which is what is recommended for health and certainly be possible on 1300 cals. You will lose more in the early stages then most likely slow down a bit.

Wrt feeling lonely, you will find plenty of company on here in the same boat, all supporting each other.

I aim for 1000 calories a day during the week and about 1400 at the weekend. I have lost about half a stone a month doing that and feel really good.

fluffy123 · 10/01/2012 16:08

Forgot to say been dieting since last Easter so now lost almost 4 and a half stone.

foreverondiet · 10/01/2012 22:41

Wobblywomble: Recommend myfitnesspal - the minimum it allows is 1200 although if you are very short (ie 5 foot) then maybe 1000 is ok.

I lost almost 4 stone (in about 7 months) and have maintained since June.

1200 calories a day within the following parameters

  • protein at each meal (eg eggs for breakfast, fish for lunch, meat for dinner) - v important to avoid loosing muscle mass
  • one piece of fruit a day (no dried or exotic fruit)
  • no sugar (hardly any)/ or grains (no rice, pasta, flour, sugar, honey etc)
  • limited starchy carbs like carrots, potatoes etc
  • diary limited to greek yoghurt and cottage cheese (lowest in carbs)
  • exercise every day either gym or shred or running - esp weights to avoid loosing muscle mass

Managed to stick to this for months although did have occasional low cal treats like skinny cow ice creams or 85% chocolate.

If you are 5 stone overweight and committed to this no reason why you can't be in size 10 jeans by Christmas! I am now in size 8 jeans!!!

wherearemysocks · 10/01/2012 23:42

Ditto what everyone else has said, 500 cals is madness.

also agree with myfitnesspal.com, loads of foods in the food bank so very easy to look up and track calories. Also you are able to add on exercise so can use some of those extra calories for treats or meals out etc.

OlympicEater · 12/01/2012 09:46

Totally agree re starvation - your body will cling on to everything you give it at 500 cals a day.

Protein will fill you up more than carby foods.

If you have the willpower to stick to such low cals, then have a look at the Intermittent Diet thread on here - two days of v low cals and then normal eating - lots of people with good success on it.
