Lower carb diet - ok with breast feeding?

I am keen to start losing baby weight (and more...) - DD2 is 11w and EBF.

I am planning to go for a reduced carb diet - but 'slow carb' rather than low carb.

Will be cutting out bread/rice/potatoes/pasta/sugar but eating pulses/beans and vegetables. Is this going to be ok with breastfeeding? BF DD1 until 15m and planning to do the same this time so waiting until I have stopped BF isn't an option.

The short answer is yes its fine no one needs bread rice pasta and sugar, but be aware if calorie counting that bf-ing uses up around 500 calories a day so you shouldn't go below 2000 a day esp with a 11 week old baby.

re: waiting, you might decide to wait until you are no longer EBF (say at 6 months when your DD2 has solids too). You need to judge by your body, if you are hungry you must eat....

Thanks Forever - think I will give it a go now and see how we get on. I'm hoping that as BF is well-established now it will be ok.

I'm not planning to calorie-count (but won't be eating pounds of cheese either!) and felt that a swap to 'good' carbs would give me a better diet without feeling hungry as I definitely wouldn't be able to BF if I was starving.

Hopefully a better mix of protein/fat/slow carbs and lots of veg will help me lose weight slowly so it's sustainable - fingers crossed.
