Want to start his in the new year as part of my "loose a stone for the summer" plan.

How do I start - I mean I need to get running trainers and a sports bra but not sure how to start, how much to run/distance and how often.

Runners give me your advice/tips please

Go on either the Runners World website and look at training plans or the Bupa website. Couch to 5k group on here would help too! Good luck, I live for running. Best thing for mind, body and soul.

Sorry cant link but someone will. It's basically a thread on sport and fitness for new runners and they'll help you and give you great support. Pop onto the runners united thread too!

I can't link to above as on my phone. However definitely look on runners world website. You need the beginners schedule.

Haha ignore your friend - does she run? No worse than any other high impact sport. I'm training for a marathon so running quite a lot, last run was 20 miles on Sunday Grin. However, 10 years ago, I was you. Can't recommend it highly enough. Maybe look and see if there are any 5k races in the spring, will give you motivation to stick to it, especially if you tell people you are doing it.

Here's a couch to 5k link:

just start running - don't wait until everything is just right, just do it

you will get better, fairly quickly

no one will be looking, or thinking anything

you can do it!

I found the NHS couch to 5k podcasts brilliant! I couldn't run for a minute without feeling like I was going to die at the beginning of September. I finished the C25K 9 week course and have now ran several 5Ks and have started my 10K training tonight!

I would never have considered myself a runner.

Be warned - it's addictiveGrin

aquashiv · 20/12/2011 20:31

Expect to be hard at first but keep going and get easier.

Think Forest Gump.
I regularly run 6 miles no problem although I am slow I just keep going.

Amazing feeling far better than any artificial gym. I have lost over two stone and honestly that is by running I still eat like the devil possessed.
As Nike says Just do it.

Also this is the best time to start when its cold your body works harder but its really refreshing if you are an old boiler like myself who is prone to overheating.Grin

Slooowly. The reason most people give up is because they try to do too much too soon, either too fast or too far and end up aching or ever injured and are jsut put off. I've not done couch to 5k but I have heard lots of people rate it. I started 7 yrs ago to lose baby weight and am now training for my 2nd marathon, and have done a few half marathons 10k runs. Try to find a local 5 or 10k race to sign up for to give you motivation.

Running is ace, I love it, put on my Ipod and just hit the park. If you are worried about joints try and run on softer surfaces like grass or track but if you have no problems then you'll be fine.
