Joint pain and weight loss

Hi, just wondered whether anyone had been overweight, suffered pains in hips and knees, lost weight and noticed the joint pains had gone.

Yes! I have lost 3 stone 10lbs since April (on a low carb diet) and all my joint pain has gone now! I also avoid nightshade plants, which are potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines and peppers, I also take glucosamine and omega 3 fish oil supplements.
I feel 10 years younger and I can now run and play with my children!

I did, when I lost weight. I didn't realize how much better I felt until I went backpacking, and carrying a 30Lb pack, realized my knee hurt, my hip hurt and suddenly I remembered that was how I'd felt ALL THE TIME. It was lovely knowing that simply removing the pack would remove the pain!

This sounds great. My joints don't hurt all the time but I've been worried about them for a while.

I'm going to do a low carb diet from new year, Dances. It's just those first few days that are tough, if I remember rightly from the Atkins days. I have glucosamine and omega 3 in, but keep forgetting to take them.

Toxic, I remember years ago I lost about 3 stone and actually felt lighter - it sounds really stupid but I'd never thought of it like that before. How much did you lose? Bread is my biggest downfall - did you find it hard to stop?

I need to get a good diet in place that's easy to use. I don't mind having the same thing every day, as long as I don't have to think about it the whole time. How did you lose weight?

I followed the Neris and India's Idiot proof diet, AKA pig2twig or IPD. It is tough the first few days, then I got into it. I just kept reminding myself that I was successfully losing weight eating foods that I love such as full fat mayo, prawns and avocado salad!

ToxicMoxie · 18/12/2011 20:57

Imperial, I too love bread. It is an unholy love, and bread is so divine! I did weight watchers with a friend, and now I am careful not to eat too much, and exercise. The addition of a 7 month old collie has helped too!

i still eat bread, but now I try to make it, so that I can control the fiber. Of course, i try not to make to too often! mmm, brioche!

Interesting that India doesn't seem to have kept the weight off, Dances. IMO, of course. I did buy the book, but it seemed a very expensive diet. Mind you I'll be home alone in January so could afford to do it!

I didn't mean to imply you wouldn't, dances! It must be hard for anyone selling a diet book as every ounce you put on is noted.

Imperial - you are completely right - it is the maintenance part that I find particularly hard and I have lost and gained weight of and on for some years. Sad
And with Christmas coming up too! But I am hoping that I now have control of my emotional eating - stuffing my face will not make be happy, long term. I am miserable when I am overweight, especially when I have joint pains and I am unable to keep up with my children - its just not worth it for the sake of eating donuts!

So I will have a biscuit with my cup of coffee and not think that I have blown it and I weight every day, cos weight naturally varies and if I weigh once a week and it turns out to be a "fat" day, I find it very disheartening.

Regarding the expense of dieting, I no longer buy my lunch at work, which saves at least £3-£4 per day and I have not used a slimming club, so have saved another £4 or so per week, so I use the money that I save to buy lovely low carb food that I enjoy eating.

Bluebell99 · 18/12/2011 22:55

I used to have pain in my hip and my knee and have lost half a stone and the pain has gone.

ToxicMoxie · 18/12/2011 23:16

Imperial, I lost 3 stone. And I have been able to keep it off, but I am afraid with the eating season upon us that it will not stay that way!

ImperialBlether · 18/12/2011 23:57

I've been reading through the low carb thread and know that's the way I have to go.

Toxic, if you're going to put on weight, make sure you enjoy it and don't feel guilty!

That's amazing, Bluebell - so much better to avoid joint problems - amazing that half a stone made that difference.

Imperial that's good advice! and since I made tiramisu for the neighbor gifts (and of course had to try it, new recipe and all that!) I am going to enjoy it!

one good thing about the weight watchers is that it helped me learn how to eat any sort of food wisely. I am not good at low carb diets, and I felt like I needed a skill set that taught me to eat any food and keep the weight off, not just certain foods. So far it has worked!

ImperialBlether · 19/12/2011 10:05

I'm no good with slimming clubs though - the company is nice but I hate having to check in a book before I eat anything.

When I've lost weight successfully in the past, it's been by having a limited number of meals I can eat, so that I don't have to think about it. I'll be on my own after new year (daughter going to live away) so I'll be able to do something quite rigid then.

The tiramisu sounds gorgeous!

It was great! And since I have chickens and used their fresh eggs, mmm, twas delightful!
