Urggghhh.
Just went for my first jog, was awful, hurt, I could hardly breathe and was just generally horrid. I really do need to get fit though, does it get any easier? Any hints?

jogging/running outside is alot harder than on the treadmill. fast walking maybe better for you or maybe jog 5 mins walk 5 then jog and so on it is more beneficial to some to speed up and slow the heartrate down but i am giving this advice only if the doctor agrees as i do not know you and any health problems you may have. or joining a gym i know that another direct debit is not always what we want but it is alot cheeper than paying daily and there is lots of added benefits for example im a member at the leisure centre so i get the gym, swim, sauna, and all the classes included for next to nothing if you work it out how much it is costing you weekly. zumba is loads of fun! joining a gym gives you much more motivation than doing it alone. but to your other question yes it does get easier but the challenge is good also because if your body gets to used to one thing then progress stops after a while and you will start to see very little change.

The answer to your first q is that maybe over in sport and exercise would be best but this works too! Anyway, yes it will get easier but probably the best approach is to use a beginners running programme, couch to 5k, lots of threads on this in S&E, seems to work for most people starting running. Also I would recommend incorporating some resistance (weight, even if just bodyweight) training into your fitness routine along with the running/other cardio. It is tough exercising when you are not used to it but it is definitely worth it, hopefully you will soon start enjoying it more and noticing the effects so keep at it Grin

Cavegirl....wow, feel like I have just run 5k reading your post!

Most people lose interest in running fairly soon because they try and do too much too soon. I don't know how fit you are but you really need to build up slowly, literally only running for 1 minute and then walk for 4, and at a slow pace too. You will be surprised how quickly your fitness improves. And definately what sleepwhenidie said, do incorporate some weights too.

I got a good running book when I started, cant remember what it was called sorry, but it was aimed at beginners and had some really good training plans and tips too, and also some really good motivational stories to keep you going.

Another who thinks the couch to 5k/25k is definately worth doing

I started 5 weeks ago and completed my first 20min run yesterday. 5 weeks ago I wouldn't have thought it, obesely overweight and very unfit but it works Smile

Good luck
