The new HOT DIET

Very simply, it involves turning off the central heating. That's it. A small lifestyle change which would bring on increased physical activity, and bring us to a size that fits. Any takers?

Surely people know that DIETS DON'T WORK. A small change to a lifestyle is likely to have greater effect.

That is actually a brilliant idea silent Grin but I don't know how DH would react 'cos he hates being cold also you may not get many takers with small babes.

I know MOST diets don't work but Paul Mckenna certainly does (of course it isn't a diet as such) i've lost 2 and half stone on it and am going to carry on maintaining and loosing actually. That along with the blood type are the answers IMO.

silentcatastrophe · 29/11/2011 18:26

The things that have saved more lives than anything else are clean water and antibiotics. Not Central Heating! It is very hard to change a way of life, and by turning down or turning off the heating, it is as though the decision is made for you and we can all tub out on wooly jumpers!! Well done with your success.

it depends how fair you think it is to inflict your diet on the rest of the house!

silentcatastrophe · 29/11/2011 19:53

Diets always inflict themselves on the other members of the household. How many mums complain about how fat they are/ how much they've eaten bla bla? With this simple solution, it can be called saving the planet! So, a few more jumpers, a bit more exercise and everyone is happy.

I always remember going carol singing and so many people (mainly men it has to be said) came to front door in loose T shirts and it WAS cold Shock. I agree a lot of people ignore the damage to the environment done by so many things that we do thoughtlessly.

We've just upgraded the insulation in the attic and it's amazing how much warmer our house is so we are turning off the central heating much more (I will say that we live 6 months of the year in a stone built house with 3ft. walls that holds heat).

silentcatastrophe · 30/11/2011 15:49

Well done you! I shared a flat with someone who kept the heating on full blast and it was sweltering when I came in off riding my bike. A bit of running about keeps you warm for quite a long time!

OP posts:

All our floors are ceramic tiled and I have to wear 3 pairs of socks and proper soled slippers BTW I put those inner soles in them and it's made them a lot warmer, and leggings under my jeans to keep warm (so i don't cool down too much when on here Grin after running about.

I admire you for riding a bike esp. if you live in london it's the other road users that would worry me.

silentcatastrophe · 30/11/2011 18:46

My bike is sitting outside gathering rust at the moment. I used to ride it a lot, but much less with 2 dogs, then children, then another dog. The children are big enough to ride a bike to school. Oh we are fair-weathered here! Tile floors are soooo cold!

Cold in winter yes but they keep it much cooler in the summer and they don't show the dirt or catshairs!

I saw a lad walking his dog on a bike (the dog was happy BTW)!

Wordsonapage · 01/12/2011 07:27

Well it's currently winter here and it's 28 degrees so I'm afraid that's not really going to help me.( or the rest of the Middle East )

silentcatastrophe · 02/12/2011 13:33

No. You don't want the heating on in that temperature! It must feel quite nice. How about the alternative of turning off the air conditioning? I think we expand a bit in the heat, then when it's cold we eat more to take up the slack.
We use a lot of energy to make our lives easier so we don't have to use our bodies to create that energy.

Air con has been off for a few weeks now

Windows are open.

Grin

I'm back in England for Christmas am looking forward to being chilly.

silentcatastrophe · 02/12/2011 14:27

It's quite chilly today. The first day this Autumn/Winter that I have wanted my gloves. Barely a touch of frost though! Are you ready for the 'No Heating Diet'?!
Dh has been outside and can't feel that it's cold indoors. I've just been for a very quick scamper with the dogs, and I'm much warmer now. It's not too cold to type!

I find it really weird that in poor hot countries they have power cuts!! Why is the world dominated by oil when they could be using unlimited solar power? Words i would miss the seasons too (though actually it hasn't been very cold here) if i lived in an equatorial country.

desertgirl · 02/12/2011 16:45

there are seasons, they are just different. We still have summer in the ME it is just that it isn't something to look forward to (temperatures in the high 40s, lots of humidity....)

One of the problems with solar power here (not a poor country, so not quite on the point) is the dust issue. Even if you don't count actual sandstorms, there is a lot of dust in the air and apparently if you don't keep solar panels fairly clean they don't work. I did read about one project which was supposed to have solved that issue without using precious desalinated water for the cleaning, but don't know what happened to it. It obviously is solvable, and there are moves in that direction, but I know it is not the sort of thing that occurred to me until someone mentioned it....

silentcatastrophe · 03/12/2011 17:44

People used to be able to build houses that kept the heat in or out long before oil. Anyway, the point of turning the heating off is really very simply that making a small change to lifestyle can make a big difference to our lives. I think that most diets ask too much, and if they are to work, it involves a step at a time doing things that are possible. It could involve looking at our behaviour and doing a bit more of what we are already doing.

OP posts:
silentcatastrophe · 06/12/2011 19:36

Small changes, big difference. There is no magic.
