Supermarket Shopping List for Dieters

Ladies - When gearing up for a diet, I find I spend far too much time wandering the aisles, looking at labels, and feeling overwhelmed. It seems inevitable that I come home with food that's low cal, but tastes like cardboard.....

In order to remove another obstacle which might prevent us from successful dieting, I suggest we compile a master supermarket shopping list for dieters. Let's pool our collective knowledge/experience for a list of good/healthy foods to keep in the house when slimming is on the agenda.

What tasty, low cal products are on your shopping list? Please list specific brands, as those can vary greatly in taste/fat content, etc.

Marks and Spencer Low Calorie, Seeded Bread

MulledMerlot · 03/01/2006 16:43

Fresh Tomato Pasta Sauces - Arabbiata etc. Check the Fat Content.

Tabs · 03/01/2006 16:43

Wholewheat pasta.
Brown basmati rice.
Tinned chopped tomatoes.
Passata.

(no brands given as they are all fairly basic foods that shouldn't have junk in whatever brand they are)

cathyspam · 03/01/2006 16:50

cous cous
tesco hot salsa dip {makes a nice, spicy pasta sauce with virtually no calories!}
Mullerlight yoghurts
freeze some grapes for snacking (they last longer and like mini ice treats)
tandoori spices for putting on chicken before grilling mmmm.

puff - those sound good. Where can I buy them?

OP posts:
puff · 03/01/2006 17:18

porridge - keeps you going til lunchtime

Finn Crisp Rye crispbreads

Pulses (lentils, beans etc) and pearl barley for soups and casseroles - also low cal and filling.

puff · 03/01/2006 17:19

I know Waitrose sell both the oatcakes and the biscuits.

Tesco definitely sells the oatcakes.

CountessDracula · 03/01/2006 17:26

No-no flatbreads - from Waitrose - yummy esp the italian herb and sesame ones.

Agree with sugar free jelly, also fat free yoghurt. Fab ice lollies are really good too, only one WW point I seem to remember and a good treat.

Cottage cheese (I get the low fat pineapple one)
Very low fat cream cheese
Lean meat esp chicken/turkey

Also try to marinade meat or chicken in low/no fat stuff like soy sauce, worcester sauce etc, makes them taste much nicer

Make low/no fat sauces to go with things like onion marmaladey stuff or tomato and pepper.

spacedonkey · 03/01/2006 17:27

Yeo Valley fat free yogs are delicious

CountessDracula · 03/01/2006 17:33

yes that's what I buy too

Does porridge taste awful when made with water? Or is it better/more filling to make with milk - presumably low fat/skimmed milk?

OP posts:
MrsSpoon · 03/01/2006 19:31

IMO porridge should be made with water and a small pinch of salt then served with a splash of low fat milk and a teaspoon of honey.

Skinny Cow lollies!

mancmum · 03/01/2006 19:34

I would say get the full fat full taste versions of everything and then have a smaller amount of them - I always feel cheated by diet food and it is never as nice or even that low in calories compared to the standard..

Today I had an entire carton of Covent Garden Thais chicken soup for lunch -- only 200 calories and it was divine - mate had a tin of weight watchers tom soup that was full of crap, tasted the pits and really did not make her feel satisifed ... OK only 100 cals but guess who was eating biscuits later this afternoon?

Full fat food fills you up for longer as well...

mandylifeboats · 03/01/2006 19:41

Caxtons Pink and Whites marshmallows, Ovaltine light instant hot choc, dried apricots, WW noodles, Sweet thai chilli flavour....

spacedonkey · 03/01/2006 20:07

I always make porridge with water - it's too rich for me with milk. The oats become creamy when they're cooked, so I don't think it matters really

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 03/01/2006 20:11

Yellow Melon.... too good to be true, refreshing and tasty!

Fry Light rather than cooking oils.... they now do an extra virgin olive oil variety.

Bovril for stock

Earlybird · 03/01/2006 20:12

Do you make the instant porridge in individual packets, or the kind that has to be "cooked"?

OP posts:
tangerinecath · 03/01/2006 20:29

Earlybird, if you add water to normal porridge oats and zap them in the microwave for 3 minutes they cook nicely, quick, warming and keeps you going all morning!

spacedonkey · 03/01/2006 20:30

I prefer ready brek type porridge because I'm a bit funny about lumps
