is it necessary to feel tired if you are actively losing weight?

I'm shrinking (on purpose) and I am more tired then usual, which is saying something because I'm always tired anyway.

Do you think this is a necessary side effect of weight loss?

No you shouldn't be feeling tired, it's possibly a sign that you're not getting enough iron or other nutrients. What have you cut out and what are you eating? If you're eating healthily you could ask for a blood test to check if you're anaemic.

DooinMeCleanin · 28/06/2011 08:15

I'm feeling more tired on my diet, but I have upped my dog walks from two 40-45 minutes walks to three, so I had presumed it was that.

Are you exercising more?

jasper · 28/06/2011 20:41

I am exercising same as before, and eating very healthily - about 1200 cals a day

ask GP to test for iron and for thyroid. both can cause tiredness.

Shaxx · 28/06/2011 22:18

Try some multi vits. I find they help me.
It'll help if you're low on iron.

I take floradix.

jasper · 28/06/2011 22:43

forever, I got that done just a few months back when I was feeling tired, all was fine.
Shaxx, I do take a multivit.

maybe I'm just too old Sad and I'll always be tired from now on.

I really do appreciate all your input.

This has been a sign of anaemia for me. Tired how - do you fall asleep in the day? Do you have to stop to have a sit down in the middle of a shopping trip / housework when you didn't before? Is your appetite less?

jasper · 29/06/2011 06:43

thanks Eighties.
Hard to say, just have very little energy all the time.
I could easily sleep for hours during the day, but try not to..
It's that walking through treacle feeling.

Have felt very tired for years and had thyroid / blood checked about 4 times in 3-4 years. Doc says I'm fine.

I wondered if it was being overweight that caused the tiredness.

FInally doing something about it now and feeling much more tired still

whyme2 · 29/06/2011 07:21

just a thought but how are you sleeping?
Insomnia, snoring etc could also explain the tiredness.

Sleepwhenidie · 29/06/2011 07:23

You say the 1200 calories is very healthy but what would it actually comprise on a typical day and how much exercise are you doing?

EightiesChick · 29/06/2011 22:25

Have they actually said what your haemoglobin levels are? Some doctors differ on what they regard as too low. Normal range is 12-16, I think, but some doctors would advise iron supplements if you were at, say, 11 or 10, whereas others wouldn't. It might just be worth checking to see if you are borderline but your doctor has decided not to intervene.

What about vitamin B12 deficiency? That's another variant.

This is a useful list of other symptoms and info: - fro the Boots MD site linked here

The body also has a remarkable ability to compensate for early anaemia. If your anaemia is mild or has developed over a long period of time, you may not notice any symptoms.

Symptoms common to many types of anaemia include the following:

easy fatigue and loss of energy
unusually rapid heartbeat, particularly with exercise
shortness of breath and headache, particularly with exercise
difficulty concentrating
dizziness
pale skin
leg cramps
insomnia
Other symptoms are associated with specific forms of anaemia.

Even if not anaemia, it seems quite possible that it's a deficiency of some vitamin or nutrient. Are you vegetarian? Is there any particular food group/type you don't eat? Are your periods very heavy?

I don't think you should just assume that you're tired and that's that. There ought to be an underlying cause that can be addressed.

lovechoc · 27/04/2012 15:38

Always get your tiredness checked out. It's normal to get tired from time to time, but not to be tired every day. Not 'normal'.

I've just been prescribed iron tabs today after having most of those symptoms mentioned above - I thought I was going mad! Now hoping it really is just anaemia and I'll feel fine in a few months.

Hope you find out what's going on, OP! :)
