Recommend me your muesli, please!

Not sure what brand mine was today (dispensed from a tupperware box) but it struck me as being rather sweet.

Can anyone recommend me a muesli that's full of all the right stuff (low carbers, look away now!) but not then drowned in sugar?

TIA

I know what you mean, it drives me crazy how much sugar gets put in cereals.

Tescos do an ownbrand swiss-style muesli with no added sugar or salt. It comes in a blue bag. It's a little sparse with the fruit and nut but it's cheap-ish so to be expected.

I remember dorest cereals muesli not being too sweet but it's been years since I had it.

sailorsgal · 17/06/2011 09:55

You can make your own. I soak oats in almond milk (you can also use either milk or soya) over night. I add pumpkin, sesame, sunflower seeds and linseeds. You can then add chopped apricots or raisins. If you like it sweet you can grate apple into it or add agavi syrup which is low glycemic unlike sugar. Health food shops sell it.

erebus · 17/06/2011 10:44

I guess I could keep a box of the seeds or nuts premixed and add as needed!

I just can't understand why it should be beyond the wit of Asda, for instance, to recognise that we don't all need our muesli baby-sweet! They're cutting back on salt in other things (though only after their hand was forced!) but whenever they do cut down sugar, they bump up fat or add aspartame.

God, is it any wonder there's a obesity problem in this country??!

sainsburys own brand no added sugar in a brown box...its really delicious.

LolaLadybird · 18/06/2011 07:23

Most supermarkets do a muesli that is no-added sugar, it's just a case of having a look at the ingredients. My favourites are the Jordan's one and Dorset Cereals. Dorset Cereals are more expensive but have lots more fruits and nuts in.

erebus · 18/06/2011 20:17

DH bought the Jordan's one for me today- I will report back!

Dorset Cereals toasted spelt muesli is lovely. I also really like Marks and Spencer's Fruit & Fibre.

AppleHEAD · 19/06/2011 20:01

I make my own also. I put in bran flakes, big porridge oats, seeds and nuts. I have in with a little apple juice, blueberries and yogurt.... I don't like dried fruit much.

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2011 08:11

I like Co op own museli, it has Fair Trade ingredients, but I would imagine it has some sugar.

The best way is to make your own from the key ingredients from a health food shop then you can regulate what goes in.

Hi AppleHEAD sorry to chip in how are you? I'm posting on a lovely thread these days it's www.mumsnet.com/Talk/big_slim_whatever_weight_loss_club/1216651-Anyone-want-to-join-a-thread-about-Eating-Less please come and say hi if you wish to (anyone).

hiddenhome · 25/06/2011 20:16

Morrisons own brand museli is great. It's based mainly on oats, so you don't get that horrible bloated feeling from the other types of muesli. It also has quite a few nuts in and fruit. I add my own blueberries and various seeds.

RobynLou · 25/06/2011 20:19

I have tesco value muesli and I really like it alot - not sweet at all, apart from the fruit.
and it's so cheap (65p!) you could add lots to it to tart it up and it'd still be cheaper than the others.

WillieWaggledagger · 25/06/2011 20:19

i eat the cheapo cheapo sainsbury's basic muesli which has no added sugar and is light on fruit and nuts (i don't like too many fancy bits)

ziptoes · 25/06/2011 20:45

Lidl's muesli is great. Cheap and so packed with fruit and nuts that we dilute it with porridge oats to make it taste like normal muesli (so even cheaper Smile).

cruelladepoppins · 26/06/2011 19:00

I second the vote for Lidl's, it's scrummy. We have it for breakfast when we visit my mum.

Unfortunately we don't have a Lidl close by, but we also like Jordan's Nut and Seed muesli. Delicious but pricey. Definitely not the lowest calorie muesli on the block (packed with nuts!) but all good scran and you don't have to eat a lot of it. Just as well given the expense.

Our local Tesco has just started stocking it, which is great as previously DH was having to do a detour to Asda on his way home from work to GET ME MY MUESLI!!!! [bangs spoon on table repeatedly]

NorksAkimbo · 26/06/2011 21:24

I also LOVE Dorset Cereal high fibre muesli...it's expensive, but I can't eat a huge fulin one sitting (it really is filling!), so one box does last me at least 2 weeks. I've tried a few others, but I keep going back to that one.

LakeFlyPie · 27/06/2011 00:03

I have tried many and the Dorset ones were previously my faves, interspersed with Tesco's Fruit and Nut when no Dorset offers on

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 29/06/2011 08:38

Hi,

Since moving to Switzerland I am totally addicted to their Bircher Muesli. You can use diff fruits, depending on seasonality:

this recipe is very similar to the original one Bircher created for dietary wellbeing
