Low calorie foods for hungry calorie counter?

Ladies I'm in need of help. Sorry to start a thread in here, I realise everyone is in their own clubs but I really need some ideas for low calorie delicious foods. I'm calorie counting. I have porridge for breakfast - quite high calorie but I need it to keep going. I generally have a salad with tuna, soup or Finn crisp crackers and cottage cheese for lunch. The problem comes about 5pm onwards when I'm simply ravenous - not helped by DP coming home from work late and having to wait until 9pm for dinner. I'm going to start cooking my own dinner earlier on and perhaps use the slow cooker for dinners that can keep warm until he gets home.

What can I cook or what ingredients can I use that are filling but still low-ish calories? I like Puy lentils, quinoa, baked or roast veg dishes. I'm not particularly into sweet things or fruit, even carrots I find a bit sweet.

Any ideas?

The Slimming World recipe books have some good ideas - the 'Original' days tend to have lots of beans and pulses recipes. Bit Hmm about porridge being high calorie though.
If you don't eat protein, you'll feel hungry. Porridge, as carbs-only, is not sustaining enough to avoid the drop in blood sugar and subsequent ravenous feelings. Add some nuts or a bit of egg or bacon. You won't lose weight quickly, but it will be a realistic, sustainable way of eating. (Note: not a diet).

Tonight I was starving at 6pm when I got home from work had 10g of cashew nuts and 2 prunes which took edge of hunger. I can't wait until 9pm to eat though, DH knows that if he's home after 8pm I don't wait for him.

Ideas of filling low calorie meals

  • I use stacks of chopped tomatoes and passata - used to pad out mince, esp turkey mince which is lower fat than beef
  • quorn mince & quorn chicken pieces / tins tesco value kidney beans
  • other pulses if you can be bothered to soak - I have 100g of various in freezer ready to use (ie soaked and boiled etc) can add to casseroles.
  • beansprouts and other stir fry veggies.
  • fat free ratatoille - then bake with white fish

Tonight made a "curry" - for 2
tin chopped tomato and half carton passata
tin kidney beans
200g chicken chopped very finely
shredded cabbage and pak choy (lots!)
onion
curry powder

Dh had rice with his, I passed on the rice.

He was home late, I plated his and he warmed it in microwave.

i find eating a banana or a couple of boiled eggs helps. have you tried rivita minis? they r nice, or crispbreads with a thin layer of philly? also i really like certain baby foods and baby snacks like biscotti. i'm also always racking my brains about low calorie recipes but im starting a juice diet tommorrow
