It is one of the best ways I'm afraid. How old are the boys could they go to a local shop when it's really needed? Plus having them snacking on heathly stuff won't hurt.

What sort of bad stuff do they need?

Hungry boys can eat apples, yoghurt, cheese, meat and pasta which are not bad foods.....

you're right. I know they don't need crisps, and other empty foods,so why do i buy it? strange one.

I have stopped buying crisps (or similar) biscuits and chocolate. The DC eat apples / rice cakes / crackers / cheese / yoghurts / chocolate milk / raisin if they are hungry.

As you say empty calories.
