How much weight is a dress size?

-or a piece of string? Yes, I know, a very non-precise question, but this is me:

5'6", 13 stone and size 18, just. Or more to the point, right now I am finding I pick up the 18 and the 16 to try on and always err towards the 18 as I like looser clothes even though I bet Trinny and Suzannah would insist on the 16!

They say 10lb at SW.

thefatishistory · 06/05/2011 11:33

IME each time I lost a stone I dropped about 1 dress size.

claire201 · 06/05/2011 11:34

5"8; 9 stone 10lb, size ten

I am also 5'6" and I find about a stone.

erebus · 06/05/2011 12:21

That's quite surprising, isn't it? Or is it? When you do the 'bags of sugar' comparison (2lb bags)- a stone is 7 bags. You'd think if you lost the weight-equivalent of 7 bags of sugar it'd translate into more than a dress size- or at least, I would have!

I will go consider it further!

You have to imagine that volume of sugar spread all over you though (sorry, vaguely disgusting thought). It doesn't just come off your mid-section for instance, but off your face and neck and lower calves and fingers and everywhere else too.

It's about a stone for me too.

SybilBeddows · 06/05/2011 12:30

depends on your build. Over the years I have fluctuated from 7 1/2 to 9 1/2 stone while staying a 12 - my waist has changed but I've still got big shoulders and hips.

NoWayNoHow · 06/05/2011 12:32

I'm 5'4" and when I was 10st8, I was a size 12 (comfortable). I'm now 9st9 and am a just-about-comfortable 10 (depending on the shop, annoyingly...)

Piccalilli2 · 06/05/2011 12:50

I'm 5'6, 11st7 and a size 14 (tight in some shops) so I reckon probably about ten pounds to a stone. I know when I was 10 pounds lighter than this (a looong time ago) I was a comfortable size 12 but that was pre-kids.

frogs · 06/05/2011 12:57

Depends how tall you are. If you are 5'11" you can gain and lose at least a stone or possibly two without needing a radically different wardrobe. If you are 5'1" I imagine a stone would involve buying new clothes, as there's much less length for the weight to be distributed over.

erebus · 06/05/2011 13:01

I'm spreadin' that sugar all around right now, mrsflowerpot -but yes, you are completely right about it!

I'd like to be a comfortable, M&S size 14 again. I think I'll have to be 10 stone 7 lbs at 5' 6" to achieve that (as opposed to my current 12 stone 10 lbs, size 18!)

I agree depends on height. I am 5 4 and I'd say around 12lbs to a stone.

I was 12 5 and 16/18
A size 16 at 12 0
A size 14 at 11 0
A size 12 at 10 0
Now 9 0 and a size 10.

Italiangreyhound · 08/05/2011 02:49

I would say that a stone per dress size is right. 14 stone size 18, 13 stone size 16 etc. But it really does depend on the store, M and S very generous sizes, cheaper shops not so generous with their fabric (unsurprisingly).

PS sorry to chip in - foreverondiet that is amazing analysis of dress sizes, have you been all those sizes recently? If you get a minute please can you pm me or pop back onto the thread I started about compulsive eating, please/ www.mumsnet.com/Talk/big_slim_whatever_weight_loss_club/1191480-Anyone-struggling-with-compulsive-ways-of-eating-Anyone-getting-any-answers I'd love to know some more of your tips for healthy weight loss. I must investigate more mindful eating.

foreverondiet · 08/05/2011 13:27
