How accurate are BMR calculators?

I'd never heard of bmr before but working mine out it says mine is 1730 cals a day. Is that a good guide for weight loss? I'm trying to stick to 1500 cals a day, going by my bmr that should be sufficient to get a 2lb a week loss.

Basal metabolic rate is how many calories you need to MAINTAIN weight. And obviously its different from person to person because its based on your weight as it is now. So if its come up wih 1730Kcals that what you need just to keep your body functioning if you were to do nothing all day. So obviously if your looking to lose weight if you ate 1730 Kcals and did some moderate exercise each day then in theoryyes you should loose weight. Like wise if you ate less than 1730Kcals and did no exercise again in theory you should lose weight

thanks for that mellie. Are they any good as a guideline or are they another crappy invention by the diet industry?

I have used one before - www.glamourdiets.com calculates your BMR from your height and weight and tells you how many calories you ought to be consuming depending on your target. It gives you a free trial, I think. I used it about 2 years ago and lost over a stone. I've just started to use it again - I'm on week 2!

BMR is very good. When i did my nutirion and weight management course BMR is what the one and only method to to measure your intake against as it is individual to YOU.

cool, thanks for that Mellie. I think Im' going to use 1730 as my baseline, and try to never go over that.
