Low carbing, about to go on all inclusive holiday - tips?

I dont want to 'diet' on holiday obviously, and will be taking advantage of the free alcohol
I want to know how effective you think avoiding bread, cakes, puddings, pasta, rice etc will be at keeping me more or less the same weight whilst on hols?
I am thinking of having say meat or cheese with salad and fruit for brekkie,
and for lunch and tea having any meat dish (bound to come with lashings of sauce or gravy), with plenty of veg or salad - what do you think?

I have just been on an inclusive holiday.

For breakfast I had an omelette (pretty big, guess 3 eggs) with vegetables like pepper, onion, tomato, spinach, plus a natural yoghurt over melon & berries, and sometimes some smoked salmon.

For lunch I had a huge plate of undressed salad from the salad bar, on some days with a small portion of grilled fish.

For dinner I avoided any sauces / gravy and carbs but ate the meat and veggies, and generally choose the soup for starter unless I thought it was creamy. I did have a small portion of desserts some days and did eat some ice-cream and chocolate although was quite restrained.

Had hardly any alcohol maybe 3-4 glasses wine whole holiday and did not drink any juices at all - only drank water and occasional diet coke.

I put on 2-3lbs (over 10 days) - it look a week to loose when I got back and I am quite happy about that.

I also did exercise every day though - for at least one hour, on some days closer to 2 hours, and on one day was around 4 hours (2 bike ride, 1 hour swim plus 1 hour in gym). I think putting on some weight is inevitable unless you are totally strict with yourself.

My tip is forget the low-carbing and enjoy your blimmin' holiday!

I may mess round in the pool, but envisage a fair amount of walking.
I dont want to go mad, and will go the meat and veg and salad route (just plenty of it!) Wouldnt have a starter any way, may go for the odd pud, but its the main that is my main thing i like anyway! (and the drinks! - which i will not be limiting) We are away for 2 weeks and I am hoping for no more than about 4lbs increase as I will be coming back into summer!
We are going to Canaries, so will enjoy the olives, meats, moho, fish etc if we snack out of the hotel.
Cant wait!

I agree better to enjoy holiday and worry about weight when you get home. I did try and adopt the principles of only eating if hungry so if I wasn't hungry would only have sliver of dessert, and I did skip a few meals.

The main reason for my exercise is that I am training for a triathlon, hence wanting to use my holiday (with very easy access to pool) to do extra training. I didn't mess around in the pool though - I swum lengths - 1 hour was around 100!

ooh where are you going? i am off to fuerteventura for 2 weeks in 2 weeks time and am desperately low carbing now to get rid of muffin top. bought loads of new bikinis and want to look ok in them. (can't wait either!)

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 05/05/2011 12:21

I don't get the muffin-top thing. You don't have to be fat to have one, so why do people diet to try to get rid of them? I am slim but if I try on jeans or whatever that are too small/tight, they give me a muffin top. Solution? Buy clothes that fit you.

I am not trying to be snippy. I genuinely puzzle over why people don't just Buy Clothes That Fit ...

blackmonday · 05/05/2011 12:26

my bikinis fit fine but i've got an overhang. it does virtually disappear when i cut out most carbs so that's what i'm doing.

sowhatshallido · 05/05/2011 12:30

i am going to lanzarote!
I love low carbing it is really working, and i dont want to destroy the good work!
I am depressed now though... I just looked at our holiday on late rooms, and it is a LOT cheaper than the supposedly cheap site I booked it on ... wont tell dh

But isn't the definition of clothes 'fitting' that they DON'T give you overhangs/lumps and bumps?

I'm still not being deliberately obtuse or awkward, I swear!

blackmonday · 05/05/2011 12:32

we booked ours a year ago and it's much cheaper now. I've stopped looking! Have a brilliant timex

blackmonday · 05/05/2011 12:35

If i bought bigger bikini bottoms then they would be baggy at the back (not a good look!) they fit fine everywhere else so a bigger size would not work, that is why i'm getting rid of the overhang Smile

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 05/05/2011 12:37

Ah, I see. I still think though that the makers of clothes should make them so that they fit better all round ... I always find that things fit well apart from in one spot. Perhaps if I could afford more expensive clothes the problem would go away ...

foreverondiet · 05/05/2011 14:20

re: muffin top: Could it be then that the style just doesn't suit your existing shape? If you want to wear that style you need to loose weight. If you chose a different bikini style then there would be no muffin top.

FWIW I don't own a bikini - although I'd probably look ok in one now (don't have any noticeable pregnancy stetch marks & have defined abs). I have just been away and wore one of 3 different speedo swimming costumes - I did a lot of swimming and a sports swimming costume is most comfortable. Looking around the pool area most of the people wearing bikinis (particularly those over 21) would have looked much better in a swimming costume.

Will probably get flamed but not really sure why bikinis even available in sizes bigger than 10 or maybe a 12 if you are tall/big frame.

Is this a joke? Smile.
