HI - Im looking for some tip on whats to buy and what not buy when shopping - I am fine with the meals but not so good with what snacks are good and need to filling. Im not going on any sort of diet just cutting down and trying to eat healthier.

So really am just looking for a few tips and pointers for starting a new healthy eating plan x

Will watch with interest but I can only say don't go when you are hungry or take the kids. They always fill the trolley up with loads of tempting treats that I can't resist!! Lol

How about fruit for snacks or veg eg carrot batons. Useful to have cold meat as well or cooked chicken pieces as they are pretty filling but not high in fat or carbs.

Fruit obviously, yogurt always a winner (go for 'low fat' rather than 'fat free' as a lot more filling for only a few more calories), cereal bars- always check the calories though (Alpen light are good), little boxes of raisins, sugar free jelly (fab!) Oh, and plain fruit ice lollies Grin

Generally, don't be too fooled with 'diet' options- get into the habit of checking the fat and calories on a product label, you'd be very suprised at how often there's no difference except for a higher price.

Yoghurts, cottage cheese, cherry tomatoes, lots of veggies. I personally drink diet coke/diet sprite but I know others don't approve. Or you could try skinny cow lollies?

I haven't really been eating fruit or cereal bars because of carbs so that rules out a lot of snacks..... I love cashew nuts - if you can limit yourself to 30g a day they are v filing....

Trying to low carb too so looking for low carb options

Poodlehorse · 02/05/2011 22:36

For low carb snacks I basically just end up with leftovers or a hardboiled egg or can of tuna or cheese. Or chorizo, olives...tapas type stuff. A few nuts if you can stop at a handful, pistachios are my fave as it takes effort to get them out of the shells. Costco sell BIG bags of them. Guacamole? All fine at home but really hard to find something out and about with a coffee as it is all cakes and scones or bread. I do keep an atkins bar or woodies bar on my person for those type of situations and for "I need chocolate/biscuit" situations, I wish coffee shops could come up with a low carb alternative snack.

Right went shopping and think i did well - lots of fruit and veg some houmous for dipping and salsa for spicying things up. Crisp breads and melba toast with cottage cheese for lunches and stuff to make soups. Also bought a multi pack of ryvita minis. Yogurts and sugar free jelly will be on the list for next week thanks for the tips everyone xxx
