Hypnoband and psychological shift

OK, I've decided to take radical action. I've done weightwatchers (3 times), slimming world, detoxes, India and Neris, Alli, acupuncture etc and I am still struggling with the same 2 stones. Losing weight is easy for a wee while, then it all comes piling back on. I have come to the conclusion that I can't do this by willpower alone and need something else.

Soooo, I have signed up for hynoband. I need to break bad habits rather than just willing them away. I had my first consultation this week with a great hypnotherapist (he's also a cognitive behavioural therapist). We had a long chat about food habits, goals, family, health and the relationships between all of these. Chatting to someone impartial has made me realise that I have some seriously compulsive habits that can be changed. I associate food with comfort, celebration, reward, commiseration, happiness etc etc. I eat standing up sometimes. I nearly always eat in front of a screen / magazine etc. My laptop is on the breakfast bar and I type facing the fridge - how can I hope to succeed with this backdrop?

I know that I can make good choices, eat slowly and stop when I'm full. So far it's sinking in (no hypnosis yet, just a chat), I'm eating well and slowly, not snacking and just the power of that conversation and the introspection that has followed has enabled me to make positive choices.

I'm going to stop here but just wanted to share this experience with you. I have my first hypnosis session on Tuesday and will update then if that's OK.

Have a great day and make positive choices!

Good luck!

I gave up smoking with hypnosis and also cut out chocolate, crisps & chips for over 3 months, until I fell pg with my DD and then for some strange reason my cravings for these foods immediately came back.

I'm a huge believer in hypnosis & have been tempted by the hypnoband too but can't justify spending that much at the moment. I'd be very interested to find out if it works for you.

Thanks bear! Did my second session today. We had a long chat about what I eat, when and why. I have to keep a journal of food and feelings as well as tracking my weight and vital stats daily.

Then we did the first hypnosis... It was very relaxing but I was aware the whole time of what was going on. The hypnosis lasted 50 minutes (I thought it was only 15!) and was pleasant enough. It dealt with not bingeing and eating healthily and slowly. Since then I've had sushi for lunch and wholemeal toast with baked beans for tea, left some on my plate both times, ate super slowly and concentrated on my food. So far it's coming pretty naturally to me and seems effortless - we'll see how long it lasts!!! I have a CD to listen to at least 4 times before my next session next week (session 3 out of 5) - I'll keep you posted!

Saw my hypnotherapist for the third time yesterday. I have been keeping a log of everything I ate, how I felt and my weight since last week. I lost 800g in 7 days which is good going and a fairly healthy rate. I have been finding that I'm not hungry, I haven't touched a biscuit or chocolate in a week because I just don't fancy them.

In yesterday's session, we did an exercise about why I ate, how I was feeling when I ate and what the consequences were ie. whether food helped my emotions. I eat when I'm distracted or bored or want to treat myself and he helped me see how food was failing to counteract these feelings. It's so bloody obvious when you speak to someone about it! We discussed replacement activities for eating when I was bored or distracted etc, or just rummaging through the fridge. Did more hypnotherapy which is lovely and relaxing and seems to help loads. Since yesterday I've been eating 5 or 6 mouthfuls and feeling full and stopping so heading in the right direction. Still keeping the log and listening to the self hypnosis CD....

Next week, it's the hypnoband itself. So far, so good.

this sounds amazing - might sign up for it myself - did you get a recommendation or just take a risk on your choice of therpaist?

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 11/05/2011 12:17

Paul McKenna sounds very similar, but at a fraction of the cost! Good luck though, I think anyone who needs to lose weigt has food issues they need to sort out forst.

Lollypolly · 11/05/2011 16:18

There is only one practise that offers hypnoband in the country I live in.

Glaikit, I have done Paul McKenna and it is very similar but it didn't work for me. The principles are the same but I find it much more effective having a live therapist with personalised sessions. Agree that losing weight without resolving the issues and reasons behind being overweight is futile as you will nearly always re-gain....
