I'm trying to lose weight and tone up. I'd started doing more exercise and had lots of stuff planned for this week.
However I've been in an accident, my face is severly cut, my shoulder aches my arm is cut and my leg hurts!!

At the moment I can't do much. How can I avoid putting weight on while I'm immobile.

sorry about accident, what happened? don't eat too much. walk when leg feels a bit better.

I have just discovered the wonder of alginate dressings (I fell over running), really speed up healing and reduce scars.

hogsback · 27/04/2011 09:25

Gosh, sorry to hear that! You really should put any thoughts of weightloss on hold until you have recovered. Watch your diet and make sure you are getting plenty of protien and iron to aid in rebuilding damaged muscles and connective tissue, watch the carbs - if you are laid up you will need much less than usual. If you are up to it look at doing some stretches and isometric exercises. You should try and have a short walk each day too to help with stiffness.

Ok I confess. The accident was when I was exercising!!

I just finished a 25km bike ride and decided to do some skills. I went on an embankment way too fast and immediately into two 'camel humps' as I was coming off the first one I got my position wrong and nose dived over my bike and ended up severly dazed and confused!!! I look like I have been through a windscreen!

It was something I would normally have a go at and enjoy. I guess this time I was just maybe over confident and got it (badly) wrong.

I landed on my left side so my shoulder is struggling to move and all my elobow and fore arm is cut and left side of my face has been left in the skills park along with some teeth marks!!

oh and thanks for the replies! My DS's are trying to give me their Easter eggs - I'm tempted but I will resist.
DH is up and down the stairs bringing me food which will have to stop, nice as it is!!

definitely get these then bloody marvellous

I fell full length on a very hard earth path going downhill, took all skin off rh knee and elbow. I put the alginate thingy on the knee which is nearly healed and not on the elbow which is still v bad. I got them in Waitrose. Initially the bruising was worse than the wound but that got better first.

hogsback · 27/04/2011 11:26

Abrasions and bumps and bruises go with the territory when mountain biking. Just put them down to experience and make sure you thoroughly clean out all the gravel and bits of twig, suprised-looking voles etc from abrasions as they can get infected really easily. If you're going to mess about in a jump park or do any downhill/freestyle then some armour might be a good idea. I stick to XC as I'm a wuss roadie at heart.

Hogsback.

I am an expierenced mountain biker and (unbeleivably) it is my job. i take kids out mountain biking (as well as other outdoor activities)

On this occasion I got it wrong. Thank goodness I'm off work for another week. All the fellas I work with are really into their mountain biking so I'm going to 1, get a bit of ribbing and 2, hear about their mountian biking tales of woe!

At the hospital the first question the nurse, doctor, consultant and receptionist said was 'Were you wearing a helmet?' I was and it is knackered!!

I do have some armour for when I go to Lee Quary but we had just been out on a trek in Scotland as a family and it was an impulse at the end of the ride. My lads were going 'come on mum, let's do this'

Like I said I was over confident at something I should have cleared easy and now I'm in bed hurting every where (including my pride Grin )

Ah, upahill, sorry didn't mean to sound patronising! Hope you're back in the saddle soon. I'm hoping to get out for a quick 15k loop this afternoon - been ever so hard to get out for anything since DS was born, and then with the winter we had I just really haven't been out at all :(

upahill · 27/04/2011 12:54

It's ok you didn't sound patronising at all.

I think I'm going to be off for a couple of weeks riding. It has shook my confidence as it was something I would be expected to do and I really ballsed it up!!

The trouble is I'm going to struggle snowboarding (next Tuesday). Sad

I'm trying to lose 2 stone and now feel like i'm back at square 1 by being almost immobile for a few days.

Ooh, where are you off snowboarding? . The way I cope with annual trip to the slopes is lots of ibuprofen (vitamin I as we call it) in the morning, and lots of vin chaud in the evening :)

upahill · 27/04/2011 13:31

Oh I'm just keeping my hand in with the snowboarding for when I go away later in the year.
I go to the chill factor near manchester for a bit of fun and often go to the Cairngorms for a long weekend in winter. Saying that I want to do some longer walks on the Cairngorms this summer, time permitting.

Unfortunately Dh is not a boarder (or skier) so I just have to take weekend breaks for now as only one of my friends board on an occasionly basis.

(I think I have an inner 17 year old boy lurking in my body rather than the 46 year old mother that I am!!)

Wow- you poor thing, sounds horrible. I wouldn't worry too much about your weight whilst you recover- Obviously don't sit in bed all day eating crisps Grin but your body does need good nutrition to heal properly, plenty of protien, like hogsback says, and loads of fruit and veg.

Pineapple has great healing properties in it- I had an operation recently and my surgeon actually advised this!
