Vegetarian - best weight loss option?

I guess being vegetarian rules out Atkins/low carb type diets.

Are you veggie? What has worked for you? I have 3 stone to lose.

I'm veggie and working out my own diet using weightlossresources as an online support. It has a big recipe database. I tend to cook my normal meals but pay attention to portion sizes and try to increase low cal food (eg lots of vegetables) and have smaller portions of high cal food (eg cheese). I put it into the online food diary and can see where I need to make adjustments. It works for me as no food is banned and as long as you stick within your calorie allowance you lose weight. You can also 'earn' extra calories through exercise.

I also regularly buy the Rosemary Conley magazine as it has some good recipes in. I think if you search her website you can print off some veggie recipes.

Good luck. I want to lose 3 stone too!

I'm losing weight as a veggie, and basically tracking what I eat and trying to do as much exercise as possible is working for me. I'm also watching how much cheese I eat like a hawk. I use www.livestrong.com to track food and exercise.

Rose Elliot does a low carb veggie diet book but I've not used it so can't vouch for it personally. I'm tempted by it, since I eat a lot of carbs and am often starving by my next meal!

I've used the Rose Elliot low carb book, but far prefer her low GI book which is brilliant. Low carbs as a veggie are so restrictive and you get utterly sick of eggs and cheese after a few days. The recipes are so fatty, I just didn't enjoy it at all, plus as a veggie, you run the risk of overdoing the carbs just by eating a decent amount of vegetables.

Low GI is fab, on the other hand - totally recommend that. It includes a range of food groups, feels healthy and I've never had so many compliments about my hair, figure, skin etc. It also means you can eat out without the horrible hassle that low carbing involves.

Try slimming world or weight watchers.

i have been veggie for around 15 years and it has NOT helped me lose weight

there's just waaaaayyyyyyy too much cheese involved, esp if you eat out.

i think for weight-loss you're better off being a meat eater and just watching what you eat/portion control that kind of stuff.

what did help me lose weight was becoming vegan :-D plus lots of exercise

I did the mcdougall diet - have a google. Very easy. 10lbs have come off without really trying!

Second/third tracking calories to reduce portion size and low GI.

Weight watchers!! Almost all fruit and veg have 0 points, you never have to go hungry or starve yourself, and there's enough leeway for you to indulge occasionally or eat out. I lost about 2 stone over the period of a year on it without trying too hard, ended up feeling very healthy and getting my 5 a day without difficulty. Am pregnant at the moment so no longer on it but will definitely be going back on once the little one is out.

SLIMMING WORLD! I am not veggie but follow their Green plan virtually all the time. All foods like jacket potato and baked beans are free foods (as long as you don't add butter etc). All fruit and veg are free, Mullerlight yoghurts are free - am a bit evangelical about it at present as am one week in and weigh today.
