Portion control

If you want to get an idea of what a portion really should be, take a look at these videos from Diabetes Care.

Revelatory for a person like me who has lost touch with what a portion of food should look like and what it means to truly feel hungry and full.

I just watched, can't believe anyone would eat those big portions and think they were normal.

But clearly they do, very worrying.

I also think this is the reason why do many children are overweight as parents might know to feed their children healthy food but not really know what a children's portion to look like.

I know I must have been guilty of eating at least some of those large portions otherwise I never would have become so overweight.

I'm now doing my very best not to force my DD to finish everything off her plate. She's only 2 but she knows when she's hungry and when she's full (we all used to know this).

I'm following Paul McKenna/Intuitive Eating philosophy rather than a diet as such (and it's already working for me) BUT watching these videos every so often is really helping me visualise a normal portion Smile.

Ridiculous portion sizes are obviously behind the US's obesity epidemic and, sadly, I think we are going the same way in the UK. That and having food offered to you everywhere, and always fast food at that.

BsshBossh saw on a programme that until the age of 3 children know when they are full and how much is enough. After age 3 if you give big portions they are likely to eat most of it even if its too much. Overtime they get used to larger portions and become overweight.

DD is 7, and well within the normal range but isn't skinny IYKWIM. Often she asks for seconds but I know she's had a good sized child's portion - so she gets fruit or a ricecake.
