I have had food issues for many years. I have tried to lose weight but never succeeded in losing much. In November I decided enough was enough and I would try and lose weight to prove to the GP I did have thyroid issues. I bought and read From Pig To Twig by India and Neris and I have lost 16lbs. I still have 2 stone to lose and the loss has slowed down but I understand more about food and why you aren't hungry but have a biscuit/a few crisps and then want lots. I highly recommend it and they also do a cook book and have a website if you want more info.

ImFab Thyroid issues show up on simple blood test the GP can do. The only issue is that if you are borderline hypothyroid the test comes back as "normal" - most people have TSH around 1-2. Some people have symptoms at 3-4.5 but the NHS cutoff for normal is up to 4.5.

Get a test and ask the GP for the EXACT results. Also have the test FIRST thing in the morning, as the TSH will be higher then than in the afternoon. If your TSH is above 3 and you have symptoms you can ask to be medicated.

I have had the bloods done twice, got different results, doctor insisted they were normal. I got the exact results and will dig them out if you think you can help.

Yes post exact results I was diagnosed in 2002 and have had loads of tests... TBH when mine was borderline the constant exhaustion was more of an issue than the weight gain.

ImFab · 20/02/2011 09:22

I had put on 2 stone from when I had my last baby but had started to lose weight. Since following From pig to twig I have lost a stone.

I had blood tests done twice in less than 2 weeks.

THS 1.18 then 0.74.
T4 11.6 then 12.7.
T3 4.7.

TSH looks very very normal - ideally around 0.5-2. If you were hypothyroid would expect it to be at least above 3. TSH is the hormone sent out by pituary gland asking thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone.

T4 normal is I think 10.0- 23.0, so its at the lower end, but still normal. When my levels were being closely monitored in pregnancy T4 was around 15-18.

I never had t3 checked (other than when i was first diagnosed), reference is 3.9 - 6.7.

Going back through old diaries I've not felt great when my T4 was around 10-11 BUT I always had a much higher TSH at these levels.

Do you have symptoms other than weight gain (eg exhaustion).

ImFab · 20/02/2011 14:54

Hi again

Yes, I am always tired. Never want to get up in the morning. It is worse than when the kids were small and I was feeding them in the night.

foreverondiet · 20/02/2011 16:38

I think you need to go back to GP and say that whilst tsh normal that t4 is right at bottom end of reference range and you are so tired you can't cope with life. Ask to see specialist, even if there is a wait?

Have you ruled out other possible causes of exhaustion eg anaemia?

FWIW taking the medication didn't really make any difference to my weight (my BMI was in healthy range when I was diagnised) - but within 2 days of starting the medication I suddenly had energy and wasn't tired any more.

ImFab · 20/02/2011 16:53

I always seem to get normal results for tests even when there is something wrong. For example, I have low blood pressure but when I am pregnant it goes up but is still within normal ranges.

I had tests a couple of years ago as I was always tired and everything came back normal.
