Help - what do I feed my husband who wants to start Atkins...tomorrow!

Hello, I was wondering if I could quickly pick the brains of any Atkins experts! My husband has decided that he is starting Atkins tomorrow. I think I get the basics, but few things I need to know..

Can you point me at decent websites with recipes - have googled loads, but would be great to know which are best.

What are the must have foods to have in the fridge? E.g. when he comes home starving or is peckish at his desk.

Do you take any supplements too?

Is there a breakfast cereal which he can have as it's not always that practical to grab scrambled eggs on the way to work!

Erm - anything else I should know?

Many thanks!

Atkins isn't healthy for medium/long term use. How old is he and does he have any problems with cholesterol, gall bladder, blood pressure etc.?

From what I can see the Dukan Diet is better and more balanced. Atkins is high fat which puts a strain on the system and can lead to ill health. It also doesn't help to re-educate you onto long term healthy eating habits.

If my dh announced that he was doint Atkins I wouldn't support him and I'd be giving him grief until he came off it.

some dangers of the Atkins diet

felicity10 · 31/01/2011 21:30

Thanks ilovemyhens. He is 35, and I agree, I had the same concerns, but how is the first part of Dukan any better when there are absolutely no vegetables, am i missing something? I was looking at this..

He can't have breakfast cereal but once he is into ketosis you can get bars etc from sainsburys, boots or on line.

Atkins is fine if you are sensible.

ilovemyhens · 31/01/2011 21:40

Dukan diet initial stage only lasts for a few days.

Undertone · 31/01/2011 21:51

For brekkie if you can't be bothered with eggs (even though scrambling them in a litle pan literally takes a few mins) just keep a selection of grabbable cold cooked meats and lumps of cheese in the fridge. But would agree Dukan better for high-protein diet, so maybe read up on that.

Blokes like Atkins because of all the bacon, sausages, cheese, mayonnaise, etc. My dad LOVES it. But the fact he has to go on it for a month or two EVERY year says everything you need to know about being able to keep the weight off after.

BeattieBow · 31/01/2011 21:59

can't he feed himself?

ilovemyhens · 31/01/2011 22:05

A diet of bacon, sausages, cheese and mayonnaise isn't good for anyone Sad Once in a while perhaps, but not on a daily basis.

alarkaspree · 31/01/2011 22:08

If you're not keen for him to do it I'd let him sort out his own breakfast and snacks. I'm not sure why it would be your job.

felicity10 · 31/01/2011 22:13

BeattieBow alarkaspree Grin you're quite right, it's not my job to feed him, but I do the shopping so was just thinking what to buy to help.

I'm going to check out this Dukan business, sounds interesting - but I agree with comments, I have a strong suspicion that the lure of bacon and eggs has something to do with this!!

It won't do him any good in the long term. Bacon is fatty and is high in salt. Eggs aren't too bad.

He'll need his cholesterol checking before he sets out on this diet if he's serious. He'll also need to undertake some exercise as diet alone won't work and the extra fitness may offset some of the bad health effects of the Atkins regime.

I think Dukan is more realistic.

Foreverondiet · 31/01/2011 22:34

I have tried dukan, but can't cope with no vegetables every second day. If you don't mind that, its healthier that atkins.

JelliBelli · 31/01/2011 23:49

Surley if he is radically changing his diet he has looked into this and is fully informed and he will be able to tell you.

I wouldn't do it on principle as i think he should know what the diet will do to his body.

Sorry not much help am i? Grin

PenguinArmy · 01/02/2011 03:40

don't feed him anything. It's his choice.

ChunkyPickle · 01/02/2011 04:59

Berries and Cream (or I liked a mix of mascapone and creme fraiche with a dash of cream to make it runny) was one of my quick breakfasts when low-carbing if I didn't fancy hot stuff like eggs.

Make sure you buy loads of greens - long beans, broccoli, spinach, green salad etc. as they fill up the plate where you'd put rice/potato/whatever if you were eating a normal carb amount. Mushrooms are also a staple.

BelfastBloke · 01/02/2011 05:44

Breakfast: Bacon and eggs, or mushroom omelette

Lunch: Chicken Caesar Salad

Snack: Atkins cereal bars from Boots

Dinner: Steak and broccolli

Loads of water, some black coffee
