Just been told following the Pig to Twig plan has made me ill

I have been doing it for nearly 3 months and have lost 16lbs. Saw the nurse today after coming over all out of it and faint/dizzy in at an appointment. Blood pressure, urine an finger prick tests all okay.

I still have 2 stone to lose and wonder where I go from here.

No, from pig to twig. TBH I have been seeing it as a better way of eating rather than a short term fix and it has sorted out my food issues.

There is no reason at all for you to get sick on that diet so long as you were taking in enough calories. The body doesn't need much in the way of carbs at all. Theres plenty in your veg. Sometimes a low carb diet and too much water can leave you low in salt and the atkins diet recommends upping your salt intake. Did the nurse make this judgement based on any medical rationale? Doesn't sound like it. And she said who wants to be thin? that's ironic given how they chunter on about people being overweight. I would ignore her she sounds like is just spouting off.

ImFab · 31/01/2011 20:53

So, any clues as to why I feel so sick and out of it?

No parnsips, carrots, peas & corn not allowed as they are starchy, but here are about 20 other vegetables that are not leaves that are allowed: courgette, aubergine, tomatoes, peppers, brocoli, cauliflower, marrow, squash, onion, mushrooms, beansprouts, sprouts, cabbage, okra, leeks, celery, pak choy, green beans, fennel, aparagus, bamboo shoots, avocado.

If you were just eating leaves, meat, fish & cheese you were not following the pig to twig diet, you were following your own amended version.

BecauseImWorthIt · 31/01/2011 22:53

You probably need to look at including more potassium and magnesium in your diet. Move to phase 2.

Use LoSalt on your food, and eat some avocado.

ImFab · 01/02/2011 09:44

Foreveronadiet - It wasn't my amended version. I might not have being eating the full variety but that was just due to me finding it easier to stick to less options.
Last night I had normal dinner and have had porridge for breakfast but I still feel nauseous.

Foreverondiet · 01/02/2011 14:14

imfab I don't agree, they never intended anyone to eat only leaves. They emphasis how important a range of vegetables are on the diet so cutting this back to just salad leaves is a significant amendment.

ImFab · 01/02/2011 14:33

Of course they didn't mean for anyone to just eat leaves but in phase one there is not a huge range of vegetables that are allowed.

I have done pig to twig and you are encouraged to eat a wide variety of veggies.
Carrots and a few others are banned in the early stages because they are too carby.

You are allowed

and I quote

"vegetables. Any kind excluding potatoes, carrots, corn and peas"

One of the best recipes is their cauliflower mash.

Having a wide varieties of vegetables is a key part if the plan.

pagwatch · 01/02/2011 14:44

Sorry, that sounds shouty. But it is simply wrong -completely wrong to say that not many veggies are allowed.

Apart from anything I thought India knight was on here occasionally. Not sure she would appreciate people saying her food plan bans veggies. That would be really bad.

BerylStreep · 01/02/2011 14:59

I [heart] pig to twig. Agree with the others about veggies.

tbh I think you should see your GP. The dizziness could be down to anything - the nurse doesn't sound like she has based her assumption on any evidence.

Note - I am not medically qualified, just overly opinionated.

pagwatch · 01/02/2011 15:02

Grin at overly opinionated.

Love your name beryl btw

BerylStreep · 01/02/2011 15:07

Meryl's my sister. She may be famous and wealthy, but I'm the prettier one.

pagwatch · 01/02/2011 15:09

And keeper of the opinions....

Foreverondiet · 01/02/2011 15:26

"there is not a huge range of vegetables that are allowed"

no thats totally wrong, almost all vegetables are allowed, with just a few exclusions eg carrots, corn, peas, potatoes and perhaps some of the other starchier ones eg parsnip/swede.

MmeLindt · 01/02/2011 15:32

Are you often nauseous? And dizzy?

Could you be pregnant?

EldritchCleavage · 01/02/2011 15:33

Agree. I felt very well on pig to twig. It's not spelled out (as in having an easy list of dos and don'ts) but if you read it carefully, in effect all vegetables are allowed in phase one unless specifically excluded. There is a caution to eat certain vegetables (i.e. tomatoes) more sparingly.

ImFab · 01/02/2011 16:04

I have reread it and yes, it does say any veg except certain ones. I was going on the meal suggestions where I maintain there wasn't a lot of vegetables used.

Pregnancy is highly unlikely.

I am sure India isn't bothered what I post but I would maintain there is an issue with menus as there are very little vegetables suggested in her meal ideas.

OP posts:
Foreverondiet · 01/02/2011 16:41

But it does say that she was eating lavish quantities of vegetables. They also say its not a cookbook as they are not chefs, and you should look in low carb cookbooks for ideas or in your normal cookbooks for low carb options.

In the first 2 days worth of menus she suggests green beans, cauliflower and butternut squash.

ImFab · 01/02/2011 17:16

I stand by what I said that not many vegetables are used in recipes but accept I have not remembered the bit about any veg but potatoes, etc. I haven't read the book in full since November. I have now made new notes so I can introduce more variety.

Clearly my memory has failed me.

OP posts:
pagwatch · 01/02/2011 18:55

My memory fails me all the time....

Try upping the veggies ImFab. It has the double whammy of upping your nutrients and filling you up so you eat less concentrated meat/protein.

I wasn't trying to argue with you by the way - but doing low carb long term with very few vegetables really isn't going to be good for your health. I was keen that you realised that you had gone off route a bit.

ImFab · 01/02/2011 19:01

I apologise if I was stroppy. I had some bad news today so have been a bit stressed as well as feeling stupid that I had been doing it wrong Blush.

Just half an hour ago I was ironing and got a sudden sharp pain in my head. I have had it once or twice before. I then felt really sick. I have broken all the rules and eaten a mushroom and chicken pasta dish DH bought me and yet I feel shaky and out of it still.

When I picked up the kids I got a really sharp pain in my chest as well. DH thinks it was because I was stressed as the kids weren't coming out of school and had had bad news.

TBH I am a bit of burying my head in the sand about it but also a bit scared.

OP posts:
Foreverondiet · 01/02/2011 19:10

I think you should go to GP but I doubt it has anything to do with the diet.

ImFab · 01/02/2011 19:18

Me too Forever at the end of the current thread someone has said about hypoglaecimic attacks.
