Can I ask a slimming world question?

Sorry I may be being a bit daft but I need some help.

I don't live in the UK and I can't get access to muller light yogurts. So I found a fat free one in the local supermarket and when I went onto the muller website and compared my yoga was actually 5 calories less per 100g than a basic vanilla mullerlight.

But when I put the details into the online snackulator it is driving out 4 Syns per pot 180g.

Bit miserable as I have had two today and want a choc lolly pop! Now I can't afford the Syns!

Can this not be a substitute for muller as it is exactly the same??

A bit new to this and not finding the website brilliant tbh.

Do you really want to change your eating habits? Because it sounds like you want to keep eating junk to me. fwiw, Muller Lights are packed full of sweetner anyway, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Are you sure slimming world is for you? It sounds like you're already feeling deprived, which is a recipe for disaster

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/01/2011 22:13

I tried Slimming World and it seemed to be a bit too hand-in-glove with certain branded foods for my liking. Muller Light obviously being one of them. As I live not a million miles from Muller's Shropshire dairy (which is NOTHING like they portray it in those hideous rural adverts) we used to get given whole trays of them as freebies for meetings. It always seemed a bit suspicious to me! I hate the bloody things anyway.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 30/01/2011 22:30

Any chance of an answer to the question?

I can't see why your yoghurt isn't pretty much the same as the Muller one. Don't get too hung up on the syn system. Just eat the thing and enjoy it.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 30/01/2011 22:56

I can't see how this could be a 'bad' thing to eat when it's still low fat.

I do agree with BooBoo, though, re the de-junking of your diet.

SW does seem to encourage the eating of crap, as I can attest - still trying to give up a newly-acquired biscuits-with-cup-of-tea habit, when pre-SW I drank hot water and snacked (if at all) on dried apricots and nuts. I now have evening cravings for sweet things, which I'd pretty much overcome years ago.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 30/01/2011 23:09

I don't eat any crap generally, just in the past too much oil in food, butter on bread and fondue twice a week.

I don't eat crisps, biscuits or fizzy drinks. I had a serious accident which meant I couldn't move or exercise throughly and I have gained some weight. With the addition of PCOS this makes it difficult to shift.

Once a month a feel like a piece of chocolate, pre menstrual cravings so to speak. My son gave me a 15g chocolate lolly which I fancied this evening.

I had one yoghurt with my breakfast which was grapefruit, orange and kiwi pieces. Then I had another this evening after dinner over some strawberries and kiwi fruit.

Generally I tend to veer to the savoury side so I don't feel the sweet tooth, although I am sure that folks on it who live on fruit must tend to get a sweet tooth from all the sugar.

Not feeling deprived at all really, just a bit gutted that I hadn't added them in. Technically I would have enough Syns to eat all of then, but I don't really want to eat more than 5 a day as I don't drink or like processed food that much either.

BelaLugosiinStripes · 31/01/2011 07:21

Generally processed low fat foods have bumped up carbohydrates/sugar to make up for the loss of taste from fat reduction. E.g. sponge pudding - if you compare the 'light' and normal version in Sainsburys, the 'light' version does have less fat but more calories!
So it may be due to a difference such as that. If you don't usually eat processed food - then I wouldn't start to 'fit in' with a diet. I suggest meal planning for a week with your usual food and see what that comes out with but crucially - reduced portion sizes, and also try favouring low-medium GI foods.

DreamTeamGirl · 01/02/2011 10:27

Bin full of maggots. Did you remember to include fat free dairy as a free part of the food?

If you post the nutritional I am happy to look it up for you.

DreamTeamGirl · 01/02/2011 10:29

You need

Calories (kCal per 100g) or (kJ per 100g)
Protein (grams per 100g)
Carbs (grams per 100g)
Fat (grams per 100g)
Package/portion size (grams)

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 02/02/2011 19:47

Thanks dream team girl - you were absolutely right I needed to add in the free food part.

So feeling much better as I like a yogurt on my bran flakes at breakfast!

And after all that I didn't even want the chocolate.

Small steps but I am enjoying slimming world as it is so much easier to eat a selection of healthy food.

And I have dropped 2 lbs this part week!

DreamTeamGirl · 02/02/2011 23:16

Ahh great news!!
Both on the 2lbs and on local yoghurt :)

I really like SW and dont find them wedded to brands- unlike say WW where they have specially pointed foods SW have always refused to brand any food, and you really can look ANYTHING up online - once you get used to the website
Are you doing BodyOptimise?

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 03/02/2011 20:07

I am doing it all online and have only skimmed through the site as I am busy in work at the mo. Is it something I can do online? Is it worthwhile?

Dream I take you are on, or have been on SW?

I am finding it very healthy and am not feeling hungry, it is so easy to work out your plate when you get the list of free foods. I am taking my lunch in though which helps, as the restaurant at work has lots of pill in the food.

I am doing all my exercise through walking at the mo, but will hopefully get some time to swim in at the weekend.

You are right about the brands too dream, don't know where that comment came from.

Apart from fry light and muller that is all I can see really. And there is no alternative for fry light anywhere as good as far as I can see.

Hiya, Yes I am both.

Have been and am currently on Slimming World- tis such a great way to eat.

I lost just shy of 3 stone in 6 months with them, then gave up smoking and kept going and kept all the weight off for almost a a year, following the plan.

Then sadly a year ago my Dad got terminal cancer and we had a few months of that, before he died, and then before our feet had hit the ground my grandfather also got terminal cancer and we spent the next few months nursing him to the end. All in 2010 was a shite year and I ended it 2 stone heavier than I started Sad

So, yes back on plan and feeling great about it at the moment.

I go to group and have not ever used the online thing (is it BodyOptimise?)
I think mostly its useful for looking up syn values and stuff, plus the food diaries. I use the regular site LOADS tho, and find it brilliant.

Are you doing EE or Reg & Green days?

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/02/2011 18:04

Sorry to hear your bereavements Dream. It is difficult when life gets in the way. I was a comfort eater and you let everything slip. However you know you did it once and you can do it again. I am sure that is great motivation. Planning is everything I find - having the free food available makes it easier when you feel like eating.

I am doing extra easy from the food lists. So far so good - even had chips beans and egg tonight! Yummy. Must search out some shops in Switzerland for cheap beans now

I will look at the body optimize section online tonight.

Log my weight on Monday and I am looking forward to it!

Good luck with your weigh in this week!

I really don't understand the comment about SW encouraging you to eat crap. I'm not having a dig at anyone in particular but I really don't understand it.

SW encourages cooking from scratch, plenty of fruit and veg and healthy portions of dairy and fibre.

You can use your syns for "crap" I suppose, but it isn't encouraged. Also, depends on yout definition of crap, I'll be having a kitkat tonight, it's my treat for the day, you can call it crap if you like but I call it an essential part of not feeling deprived and staying motivated.

WW on the other hand are brand crazy and sell crisps and biscuits in their classes, plus ready meals, cakes and desserts in the supermarkets.

In terms of mullers, I don't have them because they're not suitable for vegetarians, there are alternatives out there, I have activia fat free ones instead, I'm sure there will be an alternative brand in Switzerland.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 06/02/2011 18:34

Thank you tea. I agree. On WW you could pratically set all your points on crap and then live on salad and free soup for the rest of the week or day. I have seen friends do this and they tend to go over their points and have no energy.

I am now on about 15-20 a day fruits and vegetables, and seem to be breaking my addiction to bread. I feel so full of energy at the mo.

I also get funny reactions in RL when I tell people I am on SW, one friend told me it wasn't good to have unlimited food, she was on lighter life fgs how can that be healthier than unlimited salad and fruit. She knew of someone that ate a whole pasta n sauce for breakfast every morning, but of course there will always be people with strange eating habits on diets!

I'm not sure if the other post wasn't referring to WW actually.

I have found a really nice alternative to muller - much less sweet, much less sweetener.

Hey maggots

Oooh not a nice NN... maybe binful yes, thats better
Thanks for your kind words
How did your WI go tonight?

And shudder at Pasta'n'Sauce for brekkie... just because you CAN really doesn't mean you SHOULD!! LOL

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 12/02/2011 20:39

Hi dream,

Maggots, bin full it all makes me laugh!

I have lost half a stone in two weeks. I am delighted.

I have been told my BMI is too high for some supplementary health care benefits in Switzerland so I am soooo determined to shift this extra weight.

Funnily enough you can smoke as much as you bloody like! They don't ask a single question about that. Everyone smokes here, probably why Swiss women are the thinnest in the Western world - food too expensive, they don't tend to work so havel ads of time to cook, and they couldn't afford the healthcare if they did get lardy!

It's extra motivation to me - I hate being told what I can and can't do!

How was your weight this week - loss or gain?

I find it easier in the week with a structured working week, I need to get more active at the weekends so a nice mountain walk tomorrow!
