maple syrup diet - anyone up for it?

Very tempted to do after seeing it on
www.channel4.com/programmes/will-my-crash-diet-kill-me/4od
Seems not to do any lasting damage and could give a quick weight loss. I figure if you can get this quick weight loss (7lbs plus) then it'll be easier to maintain than if you never got there at all. And it's only for 10 days. My main worries are: laxatives are recommended and the syrup you're supposed to use is called Natural Tree Syrup and costs 36 pounds. Please don't tell me to try SW or WW or low carb. I have lost nearly 2 stone with the above. Now I just need a quick boost.

Of course not eating anything for 10 days will make you loose weight. Your metabolism will slow right down though, and you'll put it straight back on in no time!

cybbo · 30/01/2011 20:17

Whats the point

you will put it ALL back on and more, probably

theres no such thing as a quick boost

BooBooGlass · 30/01/2011 20:18

If you'd like me to tell you what it's like living with a fucked up metabolism, then I'd love to. It's not nice, and doing a stupid diet like this will give you a nice headstart on getting there. It sounds liek you are trying anything in an effort to lose weight so I wonder if the damage is already done. Pick a plan and stick to it. You can lose 7 pounds in three weeks easily without resorting to this.

thisisyesterday · 30/01/2011 20:21

well i used to hang around on eating disorder websites and this is the kind of stupid thing we all did. only for longer than 10 days

it's pointless.

to lose weight you need to change your eating habits. eat healthy, eat less and do plenty of exercise.

i have no doubt that this will lead to weight loss... but it will do noth9ing to help you keep it off.

pinkiechips · 30/01/2011 20:57

Before you all decide it's dangerous click on the link and see how well this lady did. Then google for the health benefits. Seems like fasting like this has gone on for centuries and that everyone should do yearly fasting to cleanse and detox.

Do you know the meaning of the word marketing pink? You seem very gullible

pinkiechips · 30/01/2011 23:34

Yes I do understand the power of marketing boo which is why I've had enough of WW, SW and all the other mega international corporate bodies who try and sell you something. At least with this nobody is going to make more than £36 out of me unlike WW whose very clever marketing dept has managed to extract way more than that. None of the websites I have linked to have anything to gain when they promote this crash diet.

I did it for 3days before i passed out. Fortunately it was in the house and dh was there. It's fine if you can sit and do nothing for the 10 days but if yoy have to do anything at all It's awful. There are no nutrients in it at all It's the equivalent of drinking water with a teaspoon of sugar in, please don't get sucked in. If you want a weightloss boost fast try lighterlife or lipotrim. Good luck x

chickinlickin · 31/01/2011 08:10

"No more than £36????!!" You're an absolute mug!! Imagine how much they're making from everybody that's paying that much.

I highly recommend you try the brilliant EatLess Diet - its totally free! To loose weight and keep it off just eat a bit less - permanently.

pinguwings · 31/01/2011 08:22

I did this years ago for 12 days and lost about 12pounds. Didn't buy their maple syrup, used tescos own. I was sick and dizzy, but ok.

About a week introducing actual food I was back to the weight I had been.

It does not work!

pinkiechips · 31/01/2011 11:57

Do you know I can't get over the rudeness and nastiness of people on here. So much for sisterly support: 'you're an absolute mug','you seem very gullible' Thanks Pingu and smoggi at last some advice from someone who actually knows what they're talking about and is speaking from experience. It does amuse me that people have absolutely no worries about being ripped off by WW or the like but freak out if you want to try to do something on your own.

Pinkiechips Smile I think the advice was meant with the best intentions, although delivered with a bit of a punch!

I second the advice you've been given. Having been on a nightmare merry-go-round of crash/starvation diets for 10 years of my life, it really won't work. You'll put the weight back on again, maybe even more, and will feel twice as miserable (and £36 poorer!).

I really have been there and done that and it really is miserable. I've eaten well now for 5 years and don't deny myself, within limits, and am 3 dress sizes smaller than I ever was over those 10 years.

DreamTeamGirl · 31/01/2011 13:56

pinkie
I bought a book in Sainsburys this week called 'The Fat Trap- and how to escape it' which you might enjoy. It explains things like the Maple Sugar diet, and why and it what ways they are dangerous. It only cost £3 and is an interesting read generally too.

pinkiechips · 31/01/2011 15:15

Quick update: have just used up half the maple syrup on 6 pancakes which we all had today. Might have to rethink things! Thanks Dreamgirl, but really this is the first time I've even thought about a crash diet. It was only after watching the channel 4 doc that it was in my mind.

Momentarynamechange · 31/01/2011 15:32

Pinkie I saw that programme and was quite shocked that they were saying in some cases crash diets were good, and which crash diets worked best.

I thought that was a very bad message to send out (by a doctor no less). They show you the week or so they do the diet, but what I bet they won't show is how the guys are doing 1 month or more later.

No particular point to this post, but just remember being a bit Shock about it and your post reminded me...

LadyTremaine · 31/01/2011 15:34

I was just going to come on here and say 'NO don't do it, I saw this horrendous program called "will my crash diet kill me?!" and it's really bad for you...'

The fcat that program is what's made you want to try it is very worrying to say the least Shock

HonestyBox · 31/01/2011 15:54

Pinkiechips, sorry you've been a bit upset, but there is some good advice here re. crash dieting. I wanted to offer something I've found to work for me - a recipe book called Fat Girl Slim. I love food and this book made sense to me in terms of cooking lovely food that is slightly lighter. I believe you do put on weight easily after a starvation diet as surely you make your body want to cling on to all those calories? I would really recommend the book if you are into food and cooking, I'm going to dig out my copy and have another look.

Foreverondiet · 31/01/2011 18:47

pinkiechips its a dreadful idea as your body will go into starvation mode, you'll put the weight back on when the 10 days are up.

If you really want to give your diet a boost then up your exercise for the next 10 days.

I lost 2 stone on tesco diets totals (a bit like weightwatchers) now doing low carb (have lost another half stone so far) - its normal to have plateaus, and whilst they are very frustrating, a crash diet is not going to help.

DreamTeamGirl · 31/01/2011 22:08

YAY for pancakes! Well done :)
