Hi, I have got a gastric band thing going through with my gp, and I don't really want to resort to surgery to get rid of this weight I want to do it myself.

I have been carrying weight around on and off since teenage years and added to in the last few years. This weight was my way of dealing with painfull experiences in life and I am not going to take the pain on and damage my body any more. The weight will have to go now. I want good health!

Is anyone else in this position, got loads of stones to loose?

Hi MummieHunnie, as most of us realise, it doesn't really take the pain away, it just adds to it because we are fat in addition to everything else.

I think it's great that you are considering losing the weight yourself. However, I wouldn't totally dismiss the idea of having a gastric band as well. Two of my friends had (have) gastric bands, and they both lost loads of weight.

So, are you joining a slimming club, or how are you planning to lose the weight?

MummieHunnie · 17/01/2011 14:15

Yes I am joining today, I just need a bit of hand holding really MommyMayhem. It seems the gastric bands are almost magic, I have been on the waiting list a long time and still no sign of an appointment, I can't keep going on feeling discomfort due to the weight I am carrying.

Also, the more weight you lose before the gastric band, the less risky the operation is. Can I ask which slimming club you are joining?

MommyMayhem · 17/01/2011 14:19

Sorry, just seen you are joining Slimming World! Hopefully some girls will post on here soon with some success stories?

MummieHunnie · 17/01/2011 14:21

Yes that is a good thing, regarding making the operation less risky, I know that I would feel good loosing the weight myself with no band. I have done it before and felt so good and my self esteem was so much better when I lost the weight.

I'm doing weight watchers, rather than Slimming World, but do understand as I have lots and lots and lots of weight to lose.

I've lost 2 stone since October and am starting to feel so much better already.

If I have one piece of advice for you, it's to stop thinking about the total amount, and break it down into some small goals.

Eg.

  1. Lose 5% of my body weight
  2. Lose a stone
  3. Lose 10% of my body weight
  4. Lose 2 stone
  5. Get down into the next stone bracket
  6. Buy clothes from a normal shop

etc.

It really helps to be able to tick off the goals as you go past them.

Good luck.

MummieHunnie · 17/01/2011 14:25

Little fish, yes that is really very helpfull, to break it down.

Well done for the two stones loss, I bet you must feel so much better about yourself and feel so much healthier x

Have you heard of the hypnotherapy gastro band technique?? Sounds bizarre I know but I have heard it works- basically you are hypnotised into behaving like you have a gastric band.

MummieHunnie · 17/01/2011 14:30

Yes I heard of it, I didn't go for it as I had normal weight loss hypnotherapy years ago, obviously it did not work long term. I think hypnotherpay does not work for everyone.

Littlefish · 17/01/2011 14:33

Yes I do MummieHunnie, and you will too. Smile

omaoma · 17/01/2011 19:26

i'm not in your situation but best of british, lady, you can totally do it. well done for signing up.

lots of support and buddies to call when the nibble monsters get in your head would be my advice (as somebody who took 7 years to quite smoking!)

MummieHunnie · 18/01/2011 10:13

I joined up last night and I feel good about it. I am sad that I am a stone heavier than I thought I was, so a stone heaver then I have ever been in my life.

I had eggs, toast and bacon this morning with some butter syns and a cup of coffee and some milk allowance.

I feel good and confident about going back to the slimming world eating, and remember how good I felt when I lost the excess weight I had before, prior to the hell that went on in my life.

Well done for signing up.

Just keep telling yourself that you will never be this weight again. By next week, the scales will be showing a positive change and you are in control of those changes.

MrsNonSmoker · 19/01/2011 10:18

I have to lose half of my bodyweight, but even if I lost 3 stone it would mean I could get on a plane to go to USA next year so for the time being that's my initial goal. I like slimming world but am going to try new WW first, see what that's like.

I've always had problems with weight but since giving up smoking 11 years ago I have never been slim again. Then, after DD2 was born, I lost weight BF at first, but as soon as I had to give up, I steadily put on a stone - in fact a stone for every year of her life - if it doesn't stop, it will kill me. Sad

Good for you MummieHunnie - we have to take control of this beast inside us! I am with you all the way.

Littlefish · 19/01/2011 10:41

MrsNonSmoker - if you're going to do WW, then come and join us on this thread. We're very supportive. Some of us (like me), have got lots to lose, some have a small amount but we all recognise the hard work that it takes. Smile

MrsNonSmoker · 19/01/2011 10:43

Oh thanks LittleFish I shall have a look there later.x

MummieHunnie · 19/01/2011 11:32

I did ww before and found myself hungry and I would break it as it was too restrictive, where as slimming world you can have large portions and eat as much as you like.

This morning I had a punnett of ready chopped mushrooms, four egg omlette and a bit of cheese. I am still stuffed.

OP posts:
Littlefish · 19/01/2011 11:35

I can honestly say that I haven't been hungry. WW has changed, and I'm finding it much easier to stick to this time. One of my problems is being able to recognise when I'm full, so I really need to be on a diet which is helping me to understand what "normal" eating is like.

I've also done slimmingworld in the past, and found it very easy to follow, but it didn't help me to eat normal size portions.

MummieHunnie · 19/01/2011 11:59

Little fish, I think ww is great for that portion control thing you are very correct, when you have a few stones to loose then it is good, when you are looking at dieting for a year or more full time, then to keep at it sw is going to work better for me.

OP posts:
Littlefish · 19/01/2011 12:06

I see what you're saying MummieHunnie. I have about 8 stone to lose (only 6 left to go now Smile), but recognise that I will need to be vigilant about my weight for ever. For me, it's not about just losing the weight over the course of a year or two, it's about learning a different way of eating. I know that until I understand how to control my portions, I will always put weight on, if I choose the wrong things to eat.

Good luck with your weightloss.

bbpants · 19/01/2011 12:38

Just thought I'd come in on this thread and say hello as I'm joining Slimming World tomorrow, and have loads to lose (probably about 8 stone). I've lost well with SW once before, and although I like the Weightwatchers approach, I think I need a complete change to my diet to address some issues I have with food.

MummieHunnie · 19/01/2011 12:49

Hi bbpants, good luck tomorrow! It will be nice to have someone who is also long term on sw to talk to x

OP posts:
bbpants · 19/01/2011 12:51

That's fine by me!

motherinlawintraining · 19/01/2011 13:36

Hi folks, I've just joined SW this week. I have been a member before but then got pregnant etc and put it all back on Sad.

This time, I need to lose almost 3 stone in total. (Preferably before I go back to work in May as won't fit into my uniform otherwise and it takes about 9 months to get a new set sent out !!!)

Somewhat lacking in motivation despite knowing that I NEED to do it and actually WANTING to do it. Think it's to do with the organisation of it all. I went out yesterday and bought loads of veg and salad that I like, so am going to try to make a real effort to stick to the plan tonight. (Had chinese last night as DH was going away for a wk, chose chowmein though so tried to be good !).

Please could you help motivate me and give me ideas of really quick and easy meals (I have an 8wk old, a 2.6yr old who I'm trying to potty train, and a 4 yr old who is at school).

Help !!!

P.S. Good luck to everyone !
