Is it possible to loose weight by walking?!

I don't have any free time in the week as DH works long hours, walking I could do with DTs.. How much would I need to do to make a difference?

I've always been told you should get a pedometer and aim for at least 10,000 steps per day/70,000 per week. Obviously, the more you can do, the better.

Iirc, this equates to about 5 miles per day.

Could you manage that?

I reckon a hour BRISk walking a day

Hmm... Could possibly do an hour... Would need to be extra organised as work FT...

Would I need to spend more on a pedometer to get one that's accurate or are the cheap ones just as good?

How long would it take to walk 5 miles?? Is that about an hour???

I need to lose around a stone, half would be a good start though, how long do you think it would take just walking?? Is it realistic?

As soon as it warms up / becomes lighter in the evenings then I will be on my bike until then though I really need to do something... I feel horrible, my jeans are so tight, one pair I can't even get on anymore Blush

Hi - I lost over a stone leading up to our wedding by just walking. Admittedly it was easier to fit it in those days as I walked round Hyde Park on my lunch break and also further down the tube line towards home instead of travelling the whole way, but I walked for about an hour and a half a day and it literally fell off without me changing much else in my lifestyle.

I did walk VERY briskly though, but I find that easier to do with the buggy so you probably won't look as silly as I did!

Go for it - it's the best exercise imo, and once you've got some music on or the radio/audio book you'll actually look forward to it. I really miss it actually, DS won't spend more than about 20 mins in the buggy without going mental these days!

5 miles would take you about an hour and fifteen mins I think....? I used to do 3.5 miles in 45 mins....

PS wouldn't bother with a pedometer - just go on how long you are walking for, get a little out of breath, and measure yourself once every 10 days to get the result!

I usually buy pedometers at a camping/outdoors shop for around £15 - much better price than in running shops. Don't use one of those cheap/free pedometers from Special K cereals - they aren't accurate.

Be sure you set it correctly to your stride - they can help you in the shop. Also, try it out on a route you know the distance of to check accuracy. You may have to play around with where you position the pedometer too - I find it works best on my knicker elastic placed somewhere between tummy button and hip bone.

How long it takes to walk 10,000 steps should depend on your pace, but for me, 15 minutes per mile is a good pace with 20 minutes per mile being a leisurely pace (I think I'm recalling that correctly! Confused) So - count on somewhere between 60-90 minutes per day.

Wow, thanks for all the advice! I feel better about doing it after hearing your experiences, going to start tomorrow! DTs will love it, will mean they can go on scooters / bikes even more!
