BMI ponderings...

Out of curiosity, how many people here think that the weight that would put them in the middle of "normal" on a BMI chart would be an appropriate weight for them?

I've finally reached my target weight of 11 stone (I'm 5'8) after 9 months of careful eating. Popped my stats into a BMI calculator, and I'm only just within the normal ranges, yet I'm a size 10 on the bottom, size 12 on top.

I would have to be 9 stone 6lbs to hit the middle of "normal", and yet I don't think I could lose more than about half a stone without compromising my health or losing muscle rather than fat.

Is it really only people who are size 6-8 who are in the middle of "normal"?

Is BMI really an indicator of healthy weight?

You sound fine to me. I'm 5'6" and have only ever weighed 8 stone 5lbs max. I was considered 'skinny' at size 12 and I'm now a 10. It's build that counts too.

Well done on reaching your target weight.

BMI is very outdated, as my gym manager explained to me

more important is body fat ratio. i got mine measured when i inducted at the gym.

Yes it really doesn't seem to take build into account. I am pretty much the same as OP in height and weight (or will be soon!) and yet it's only just an acceptable BMI apparently.
