How long should it take me to lose 7 kilos?

Most of my adult life I've weighed about 55 to 57 kilos (around 9 stone).
Over the last year I've gained about 7 kilos (a stone). I'm about 5 foot 7.

What is a realistic amount to try and lose per week to bring it back down to 9 stone?

Give it six months.

Shitemum · 17/08/2010 19:48

Really?
Not boasting but I've never found it hard to lose weight before now, I've just never had to lose so much of it...
I thought a couple of months would do it.

It doesn't matter really, just that I want to make a weekly chart with target weights on it Smile

Good, sustainable weight loss is 1-2lbs a week maximum. After that you're not losing fat, you're losing lean tissue.

If you diet and lose it quickly, it'll go back on again as you're not actually getting rid of the fat.

A healthy lifestyle that is sustainable is better than a quick fix.

I'd give you 6 months too. Do it gradually.

And don't measure just weight. Energy levels, clothes fitting, feeling well and happy etc. All good things to measure.

Thing is Shitemum, you're not technically overweight. You're hoping to go from slim to very slim.

People who are very overweight lose weight more quickly.

Its all a question of proportion of bodyweight innit?

And that other HUGE contributory factor - ones age.

Shitemum · 17/08/2010 20:58

Hmm, well I'll be swimming once a week from Thursday onwards and walking more, don't have a car. Am banning sweets and biscuits etc and will snack on fruit {good intentions}
I'm 42 and admit I've been waiting for the point of no return to hit - till now it's never been a problem losing it.

I know I'm not technically overweight but I have a revolting roll of fat round my stomach and my thighs rub together at the top when I walk which makes me fell icky.

I think the real catalist was a friend asking me, only half-jokingly, if I was pregnant last week... Shock

Oh, and my clothes dont fit, have had to make an extra hole in my belt and the buckle still digs into me!

Aww shitey, don't want to be the harbinger of doom, but if you think its hard to lose weight at 42, just you wait til you're 47 girlie. Mark my words.

Shitemum · 17/08/2010 21:09

Well you see bibbity that is one of the reasons it has to go NOW! If I can just stay the right weight from now on then I won't have to lose any later {kids self}

Shitey, I hope you know I have nominated you on more than one occasion as my favourite-named Mumsnetter Smile.

Its hellish hard to lose weight in your 40s and older. Give yourself small goals (3 kilos, then 2 kilos, then 1 kilo, then the final kilo) with a nice reward when you have achieved each.

Adjust your diet and exercise in a way that you think will be truly sustainable for the rest of your life.

Shitemum · 18/08/2010 15:28

Aw, thanks bibbity (especially since I think I was once a bit sharp with you on a bilingual thread Blush)

I think my new scales must be rubbish as I appear to have lost a kilo since last night Hmm

I lay 95% of the blame on the 'British diet' and BOGOFs - or rather on the reduced section of the supermarket next door to me. Have been buying lots of rubbish I wouldn't normally buy if it wasn't reduced.

Moved back to the UK from a mediterranean country a year ago and it has been downhill all the way since, diet-wise!

Maybe I should print out my old Spanish shopping list and stick to it from now on...

Shitemum, 9 stone is slim for your height so I guess it's going to be a slower loss than for people who are properly overweight.

Having said that, I think a lb a week is realistic for anyone so three months would be an achievable/sensible goal.

Anyone use Curves gyms?

I am seriously condsidering joining the above. I do have some reservations as they seem to do things somewhat differently to most gyms. But it is the only gym close enough for me to logistically go to.
Just wondered if anyone had any experiences and if they got results. I believe it is a franchise so in theory the same should apply no matter what branch you go to,

Ooops sorry - posted in the wrong place and I don't know how to delete.
