TV prog says 138 lb is at the "upper limit" for a 5 foot 6 inch woman. Wrong?

Does anybody else watch Bulging Brides on LivingTV. Total crud but very addictive. And generally quite sensible in nutrition and exercise advice. But then they had a 5' 6" woman who was a couple of pounds under ten stone, which they described at the "upper limit" of weight acceptability. I'm an inch taller and would love to be under ten stone, I'd call that pretty perfect in my big boned book.
Are they wrong or am I?

Well I agree with you but am starting to think what do I know
10st seems on the small side of average and 5ft6 isn't tiny

racmac · 13/08/2010 15:50

well im 5ft 6 an weigh 10st 6 ish but im right in the middle of bmi for normal so dont understand that comment tbh

It is about cheesy canadian weddings so maybe it's at the upper limit to wear a princess cut strapless sequinned number. Think maybe 10 is the age limit for having princess for a day fantasies...

It works out as a BMI of 22 so a very healthy weight but not the upper limit by any means.
They are wrong but I guess that making the bride to be feel shit about herself adds to the dramatic tension.

I watch that too - in fact I am totally addicted - (can I confess now) I actually write down their names, heights & vital stats & weights before & after.

I cannot believe how light most of them are & they are told to lose weight! Tho I have to say that a lot of them have some odd body shapes for their weight.

I am 158 lbs & 39-29-39 but can fit into a UK12. I cannot believe these women sometimes weigh 1.5stones less than me - all I can say mine must be all muscle! lol

ppeatfruit · 13/08/2010 16:40

I was flicking through (as you do) and i wondered where the 'fat' brides were! this is a nasty programme guaranteed to make us all feel fat! IMO

pointydog · 13/08/2010 16:40

Just under 10st? Oh cripes.

Bulging Brides? Feckin ell.

Joby1970 · 13/08/2010 16:42

there are a couple on there over 200 lbs - I think they were 5 foot 8. however, most are around 5 foot 5 & weigh under 150lbs.

PollyParanoia · 13/08/2010 17:52

Joby, so glad I'm not the only one though I don't write down their stats. I record the progs and then fast forward the bits between weigh-ins because there's a limit to how many times you can watch a bride and her groom bicycle up a mountain before high fiving Tommy Europe (ditto drag a heavy ball along the beach with her hens).
Actually I quite like the fact that the brides aren't obese because it makes it more relatable. So many of these programmes are a bit freak showy but this is more in the realms of normal and being 20something (as they all are) and about to get married is your best shot at being in shape. That's why I was a bit perturbed by the "upper limit" comment. Think they could say something like "it's a healthy weight to be, but Sharlene would love to tone up and define her waist more" or something...

It's a horrible, horrible show. 10 stone is mid BMI healthy range so they shouldn't be encouraging people to weigh much below it but the whole premise of the show is disgusting.
Ohh, he asked you to marry him but what happens when you walk down the aisle with all your fat showing you fat biffer, he'll run away.
bollocks.

Any dressmaker worth their salt can make an 11 stone woman look good in a dress, let alone anyone bigger.

LC200 · 13/08/2010 19:12

Absolute rubbish. I am 5'8" and about 10 stone and my BMI is 21 ish which is well within the healthy range, towards the bottom end even, rather than the top. 2 inches is not going to make that much difference surely!

Joby1970 · 16/08/2010 08:21

having watched (a lot) of the programmes I have noticed that the brides tend to buy their dress to small - well derrrr of course it's going to look a bugger!
