I start off enthusiastically, prepare myself, encourage myself, dream about being slim and feel positive.

I managed to last 2 weeks on Zoe Harcome.

I managed to last 6 weeks on Cambridge

I managed to last 3 hours on Atkins

I managed to last a day on WW

Clearly it's me!!!

I just don't know why I give up.

Well Atkins is a tough one so I'm not suprised.

It could be one of a few things.

#1
You're not setting yourself realistic goals. Results aren't instant and it's not going to make you slim in a day but deep down you want results NOW and when you don't see them you lose motivation.

#2
You fall off the wagon once and beat yourself up thinking 'oh I can't do this, I've ruined all my good work with one square of chocolate, there's no point carrying on' - I do this and it took me a while to realise that each day is a new day and one slip-up doesn't cancel everything out

#3
You choose complicated diets which involve drinking strange concoctions, cutting out entire food groups or doing maths. The best changes are simple ones

#4
You find that diets themselves actually make you feel ill (usually because of cutting out and entire food group) or grumpy (because you're denying yourself the things you want).

#5
You don't have support. You're the only person in the world on a diet and everyone else spends all day talking about food and eating cake - or at least that's how it feels.

Any of those sound familiar?

I think half the secret of dieting is psychological TBH and discipline and flexibility are required in equal parts.

Seems like a lot of fad diets to me. That said, I rate WW very highly, simply because I think it enables you to keep on track whist eating 'normal' foods. Also, even if you think you keep having your 'moment' of realisation that it's got to be done, this hasn't really happened for you yet.

What about completely relaxing on the whole weight-loss front for a while, just until you feel that you can come back to it ready to give it a good go?

carrielou2007 · 26/07/2010 10:33

I used to do atkins, suited me well, I kept the weight off but after having dd I wanted us both eating lots of fruit and veg plus I was BF.

I've just got to my target (5 lbs less than before pregnant) for slimming world after having ds though I still want to lose anoter stone now, 9 lbs to get my BMI back to normal rather than overweight.

I love food, I love eating, it's worked really well for me as if I want to eat I can?? I've had a few days off and have pigged out and started back on it today if you want to join me???

carrielou2007 · 26/07/2010 10:35

Sorry that sounded preechy (I want to tell everyone about how fab SW is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) not what you asked for

mummalish · 26/07/2010 10:46

ViveLaFrak, it's all those things you mention. I am overwhelmed by how much weight I have to lose, and I suppose it seems such a large mountain to climb. Of course, persistence is key, I know this, but yet I fail.

I know I need to do something, and stick to it.

Willpower has been lacking. I have also just never been overweight before (started when I was preganant, and has just excalated, my bad eating habits that is)

So now, for the first time in my life, I am quite overweight, and hate it.

Not nice to feel so bad about myself, so maybe time to stop whingeing and stick to something.

xx

Have you tried not dieting but exercising? It doesn't really sound like you're in the right 'place' to diet IYSWIM.

Or join one of the slimming clubs on here? It's not something I've ever done as I cam to the conclusion diets just don't work for me!

mummalish · 26/07/2010 12:36

Yes, surely excercising even without dieting is good, so will give that a go. Always made excuses not to excercise, but no more.

Thanks.

How about looking at the paul Mckenna way of eating ;it involves changing HOW you eat rather than WHAT and it does work . You can get the book and CD, the hypnosis thing is good too.
