BMI 39. Would you or did you take medication.

I have finally admitted to GP that I need to do something about weight. Was really shocked to discover my bmi is now 39. Doctor vaguely mentioned medication but has initially referred me to a nurse led programme.

Any thoughts on dilemma.

You are going to need somehtng sustainable, but if medication kick starts the weight loss I don't see the problem tbh. The biggest hurdle imo to losing a significant amount of weight is the admitting to yourself that you need to do it, and by the sounds of it you're at that stage so well done
It is doable. I've gone from a BMI of 32, when I was massively in denial about how big I was, to a BMI of 20, in under a year. No medication for me, a low carb diet and an absolute determination that it needs to be done are what saw me through. In your shoes, I would do a bit of research first. Decide on a plan that you know you will be able to stick to, and for a longish time, if not for life. My only problem with medication is that it almost takes responsibility away from yourself. There's a lot to be said for thinking 'I won't have that cake because I choose not , it won't make me happy and I deserve better for myself' rather than 'I really want that cake, but it will make me poo oil' Work out just how and why you got so big. All of my weight was put on after the worst year of my life, it was very much an emotional problem manifesting itself in a physical way. As soon as I dealt with that, I felt free to let the weight go, which is corny but true. If you're goign to get the weight off and keep it off, you do need to do the head stuff too.
Good luck

God yes, 39 is morbidly obese. Would be very beneficial to your life expectancy to kick start weight loss.

dolphin my BMI was the same as yours and I have reduced it by 2 in less than 2 months by cutting out cake/crisps/biscuits/etc and by not having any pasta/rice/potato etc with my evening meal. Apart from that I have eaten normally.
I have also been doing at least 30 mins of vigorous exercise every day, at the moment I'm using the 30-day-shred DVD and getting good results. I have lost a total of 5 inches off my waist, 3 round boobs, 2 off hips.

Personally I feel happier knowing that I am achieving this through my own efforts, and teaching myself good habits which will last me the rest of my life, rather than using medication which I wouldn't be able to stay on forever.

Good luck with whatever you decide, you can do it

Dolphin01 I think you should consider a weight loss group.... it really does help motivate you to succeed - the weightwathers VS nurse trial has been in the papers very recently but it is easier to do it with others than on your own. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/10577030.stm
It doesn't have to be weightwatchers - there is slimming world, lighter life and others just choose what is right for you.

Interesting stuff. Thank you. I must admit I would ideally like to go back to Rosemary Conley which has worked for me in the past. However, I just cannnot to that at the mo as its in the evening.

I will know more about nurse led programme by the end of week. Just hoping it will work for me.
