How to break in your wedding shoes without killing your feet

Hi folks! I want to avoid the dreaded blisters. What’s your go-to trick for breaking in heels, wedges, or fancy shoes before the big day? Any life-saving tips?

I just didn't buy shoes that I needed to do this with. Sorry, that wasn't very helpful.

PashaMinaMio · 08/10/2025 07:03

Could you try wearing socks to break them in by stretching them a tiny bit. Couple of hours around the house some days?

I did this one time and it worked well.

WicketWoo · 08/10/2025 07:06

Buy them a size too big and buy half size heel gripper thing. They will grip your feet but they will still be lose enough to prevent rubbing.

CoastalCalm · 08/10/2025 07:19

Socks and wear around house for a while

nilniosk · 08/10/2025 07:26

Socks work. Little heat (hairdryer) helps break leather in. You can buy shoe stretcher things on Amazon - obviously don’t crank up the stretch or they’ll be too big, but can be used to break shoes in. Let us know the materiel and might have some other ideas :)

Wear trainers for dancing

PearlRiver · 08/10/2025 07:39

Wore them out for my hen night! I didn’t mind if they weren’t then pristine for the big day if it meant I was comfortable.

Menonut · 08/10/2025 19:22

Socks and wear them around the house beforehand. Start with 20-30 mins and build it up each day. Did this with bridesmaid shoes and it worked a treat.

Sagaciously · 08/10/2025 19:23

I wore mine with socks around the house.

YumYa · 08/10/2025 19:33

2 pairs of socks worn around the house. Or buy some that are comfy. Vinted are good. I did this recently for a special occasion.

This is what I thought. Why are we buying shoes that cause blisters?

They’re not instruments of torture. New shoes often require breaking in.

I wore new converse and walked a long way the other day, I have 2 blisters because of them.

Notfeelinit · 08/10/2025 19:38

Ok this is one I 100% have the answer for! Tried and tested and actually works! I haven’t done it specifically for wedding shoes but a number of shoes of different materials (leather, fabric, faux leather) over the years and it’s great.

Poratoes!
Get a cheap bag of mixed size spuds or ones from home if they’re fresh and you literally shove them in. I normally have to try a few to get the right size/ shape. But basically they work like shoe stretchers and you can tailor it depending on which part of the shoe you want to stretch ie the toes or the top edge which goes over the top of your foot etc. Just shove them in and leave them in to do their job :) it’s a great way and a cheap way to gently stretch shoes for comfort.

This has reminded me I need to do it for a pair of my DC’s which are fine for length but a bit snug in the depth (top edge where it meets the foot).

yonem · 08/10/2025 19:42

I wore shoes that were already comfortable and called them my something old. If your dress is full length no one will see them anyway. And mine were flat so that I could enjoy dancing to the band I’d paid so much for. Heels are a bit 1980s.

junebirthdaygirl · 08/10/2025 20:34

I have heard of people using voltoral cream all over their feet on the day to eliminate any pain.

RampantIvy · 08/10/2025 20:53

That's why I try on loads of shoes before buying. I won't buy anything that needs breaking in. They have to be comfortable straight away.

greenmarsupial · 08/10/2025 21:18

My trick is wet socks. Put socks on and then soak feet, wear the shoes around the house until socks are dry.

Not sure you proved your point there? Were you wearing socks?

ConflictofInterest · 09/10/2025 09:38

Sad to read this, don't wear shoes that hurt you on your wedding day (or any day) there's no need to do that.

Perfidia · 09/10/2025 09:43

I agree no one should be deliberately buying uncomfortable shoes. However, so many people don’t wear closed up leather shoes these days - just fabric trainers or huge clumpy boots - and their feet spread, so it’s difficult to get back into traditional footwear.

Wear them around the house for a couple of weeks beforehand, @anaarofficial.

Tbf high heels are instruments of torture.

You'll have to wear them in OP. Or wear them for a bit, see where they rub and get the plasters out before wearing.

AnnaMagnani · 09/10/2025 09:47

Think about how much your shoes will be visible under your dress. Mine were a complete waste of money, I should have worn trainers and had fun in comfort.

Lurkingandlearning · 09/10/2025 12:08

Rubbing Vaseline on the inside of the shoe where it rubs softens the leather at that spot without stretching the whole shoe.

If you’re not sure if they’ll be ok on the day blisteze plasters are excellent and barely visible. I think you’d have to know they were there to see them

Notfeelinit · 09/10/2025 18:27

Sorry, typo, that was supposed to say potatoes!

I agree. Unless you are in a short dress who is going to notice what shoes you are wearing?
