Catering options with no kitchen at venue

Have booked our venue for July 2026- its a village hall type place, so no kitchen or fridges and we have to organise catering ourselves. My head is spinning a bit from the different options!

  • Pizza van/other food truck- the venue said other weddings have done this, however when I've been to an event with this sort of thing it's always massive queues
  • Hot buffet in warmer trays- is this just a bit naff?
  • Cold buffet- is this substantial enough a meal?

We're doing the legal bit the day before so this will be a late event- 5ish start with a short faux ceremony/blessing and some speeches then straight into the party. Quite casual and low key, about 100 guests.

Is there another food option I'm not considering??

Could you move the time back a bit, encourage people to eat before they arrive and just serve a cold buffet as snack food mid evening?

I think cold food - as long as it’s varied and delicious - is fine. We hired a refrigerated trailer or van or something, and kept it all in there. Or you could contact caterers and ask them what they’d do - they may be used to managing without kitchen facilities, preparing everything offside and bringing it in.
Im sure they could do mostly cold buffet with some warmed trays. If the food is good this is by far my preferred type of food at weddings / events, rather than the plated up type.

Look at a company like this https://thewildoven.co.uk/catering-faqs/ who do festival style, or grazing style. They don't need a kitchen, a catering tent also suffices.

First one that came up on Google by the way! Not a recommendation...

Cold buffet is fine, lots of options, prawns, smoked salmon, quiche, chicken, cooked meat, sausages, crisps, nice bread, selection of salads, whatever you like and to your budget. then cold puddings and wedding cake. Get loads of ice to keep things cool. Keeping things warm can be a problem with possibility of food poisoning if not kept at the right temperature, would be a no no for me. Food van too slow if there are any number of people. I used a village hall for an event found out just in time there was a meter for electricity that you had to feed with coins! Might want to check.

My experience when planning an event like this was that all the main local caterers knew what the facilities were like at all the usual local venues, so you can just contact the ones you like the look of and ask them what they would do. It would be unusual in my area to have a village hall with no kitchen, but if there's space for food trucks there'll be space for a refrigerated trailer (as suggested by PP), or if there's outdoor space some caterers would be able to rig up a catering tent with everything they need (which is what you would do for a marquee wedding in a field). You'll probably need to hire fridges anyway if you are wanting a bar; again, many caterers would bring all that stuff with them. It all depends on your budget and preferences.

Oh, and I went to a party once that did a hog roast - that was probably more efficient than some types of food truck because all the meat was ready at the same time so it was just a case of serving it rather than having to cook batches of individual burgers or pizzas.

Cold buffet seems the better option. Tbh though I’d rather get someone in to do it or a food van so you don’t have to think about it

beetr00 · 14/07/2025 13:50

@weddinghelp2026 chippy van?

weddinghelp2026 · 14/07/2025 13:51

I'd love a chippy van @beetr00 but again, worried about how long it would take!

Chippy van surely better than some of the other food truck alternatives - they can have lots of chips ready at the same time, and quite a few portions of fish ready to go. Much quicker than e.g. pizza.

I reckon though if the venue are saying other people have used food trucks, it's worth asking them which ones worked well.

We didn't have a kitchen at our venue and I dont remember our caterer mentioning it once? We had a 3 course dinner all served hot. In hindsight I wonder what they did!

They probably brought it all with them in a tent. That's what they'd do if you were having a marquee wedding in a field.
