Isle of Man wedding

I am organising a wedding for a friend who would like to get married on IOM. It’s a micro wedding -.couple plus 6 guests.
I have seen list of approved places but would like to know if anyone knows what the registry office in Peel is like. My friend particularly likes Peel but I can’t find any pictures of the registry office or ceremony room .
alternatively any feedback on the other approved venues in Peel which are the house of manaman or peel castle.
thank you!

Hi OP, I'm Manx (currently working & living in England), and I'll help if I can. I've always said that if I ever get married to my long-term partner it will have to be back home in Castle Rushen! Beautiful place, opposite the old police station with the funky turret, round the corner from the George Hotel for a fantastic meal & accommodation. He's now seriously looking ... he's like, 'why be brought up round the corner from an actual Castle and not get married in it?'

I don't actually know anyone who got married or attended a ceremony in Peel registry office! They've all been in churches and Castle Rushen. (Can you tell which bit of the Island I'm from?!) You could maybe ask on one of the Manx Facebook sites? Or email the registry office direct - Manx people are usually pretty helpful. Or a poster called ManxExile on here might know. I've seen other manxies here, too.

Will the wedding party all be travelling over from the UK? Are you familiar with the Isle of Man at all, and its different laws? Budget? Will you have transport while on the Island?

The weather can put the mockers on the best-laid plans btw - my cousin's was almost cancelled because of this when the groom's family were stuck in Heysham! - and don't expect your mobile phones to work Grin Also: think parking. Some times of year can be very congested, e.g. bike race weeks, although given your wedding party is small it might not be too bad. Peel Castle has plenty of parking along the breakwater side (not so much fun though in strapless silk and heels in a 70mph hooley), and the House of Manannan is nearby, back along the quayside and opposite. Both lovely places, but I prefer Peel Castle for its stark beauty and vibes.

If you want to use heritage transport as part of the day, then you could use the steam train which stops in Castletown, but doesn't go to Peel. It's also seasonal, i.e. closes in winter season.

Happy to chat.

That is such a helpful post - thank you! My friends have been together for 45 yrs but just now getting older and decided the time is right. They’re both bikers so know the island very well from TT and Grand Prix visits over many years . They are a very low key pair and have no family hence the tiny party. Only the closest friends - we will all be blubbing that this day has finally come. We’re pals from uni who met in the 1980s and have been through such a lot together/ mostly fun times!
I’ll definitely have a look at the venues you mentioned too and I’m in contact with the registration office to check out what I can about Peel.
Budget is not an issue and I have checked that the marriage will be validly recognised in England . Are there any other different laws I need to be aware of?
I’ve been warned about the weather . we have travelled together all over the world but this is by far their very favourite place. I can’t wait to see it for myself .

We live on the IOM. And got married in castle rushen, steam train from Douglas to Castletown. Attended a few weddings there and it’s special. They’ll marry them outside in the castle garden if weather is nice.

perl castle is spectacular but I’m not sure what the bad weather back up is.

there are residency requirements, from memory it’s a week, but they best check.

restaurants after…peel, the boatyard is very nice indeed. Or a kipper bap n the breakwater.

castletown, the Abbey is where we had our reception, the food is lovely and they’d do a nice job of making a small party feel special. Garrison has a roof terrace that is lovely and is right next to the castle. Kizuna is an amazingly good Japanese restaurant ( proper Japanese food) very chic and friendly in Castletown.

or get back on the train and go down to port Erin to foraging vintners, best sunset in the world with rhubarb fizz.

they might be able to get married at the TT grandstand, certainly have photos there. And if you don’t ride a motorbike then get a trike tour round the course, it’s great, I’m not a TT fan, but even I found it interesting.

feel free to PM me.

@IOMQuestions I was thinking that too about the residency thing. 7 or 8 days?

Or the couple can book and attend their notice appointment earlier, and their certificate to marry stays valid for a year, I think?

@boredsolicitor it’s all on the IoM government website anyway!

It’s great that they’re bikers. They’ll know the Island really well, and its vagaries of the weather Smile

boredsolicitor · 03/06/2025 10:45

Yes it’s 8 days from the notice of marriage to the wedding so they’ll probably come for z2 weeks and we and others will come for a week. Thank you so much for the fantastic suggestions and advice . I’ll let you know what we end up doing! Can’t wait!

You sound like you know your stuff - are you really a bored solicitor as per your user name?!

The IoM Govt website says that the couple must book their Notice Appointment in advance, and lists all the documents required. I don't think it's too dissimilar to England & Wales in terms of procedures and legalities.

Are you flying or sailing across? I can give a couple of reccies on car hire if you need.

boredsolicitor · 03/06/2025 11:32

Yes I am a bored solicitor!
I think we’ll travel by ferry so we can explore the island - woukd September be a good time to visit do you think? A bit quieter perhaps?

Or perhaps better to fly and hire a car - I hadn’t thought of that .

To be honest it's pretty quiet most of the time. Apart from TT and Manx Grand Prix times. Best weather tends to be April May. September can be beautiful. July and August tends to be wet and rainy.

Teeval · 03/06/2025 13:44

We're going back in September, funnily enough, as a precursor to going back for good. Manx schools are back on the 1st/2nd Sept and the Grand Prix is done & dusted, so any time after that is pretty quiet like @IOMQuestions says; and the weather can still be sunshiney. Also in September everything is still open and working like the steam railway, the electric railway, the horse trams and various (as Father Ted would say) 'places of interest'.

I'll bring some confetti Grin

This time we're flying EasyJet and hiring a car at Ronaldsway airport (local company called Mylchreest's) but Avis is ok too. Never tried the other firms. When we move back it'll be vehicle(s) and ferry from Liverpool or Heysham.

boredsolicitor · 03/06/2025 15:15

Thank you everyone! You have confirmed what my friends have always said that IOM folk are super helpful and friendly.

You're welcome. If you think of anything else, please just ask.

Don't forget to check your mobile phone packages for compatibility over there, roaming charges, etc. And check accommodations for free Wi-Fi - luckily the latter is pretty common now.

And anyone called Juan isn't a Juan, they're a JOO-an.
