It’s like rain, on your wedding day

Naturally mine is due at the end of this lovely period of weather we have been having. May 21st. Weather reports are suggesting thunderstorms.
we had quite a lot of time allocated for photos (before ceremony so no one is waiting around). Did anyone else have terrible weather on their day?

Don't panic just yet - it's a long way off! My son is getting married on 10th May and a few weeks ago it looked as though this was going to be wet and windy and in the middle of a changeable spell. Now it's going to be 21 degrees and blazing sunshine. So don't despair and keep an eye on the Met Office!

Good luck with the wedding!

CursiveCrisis · 08/05/2025 17:18

Mine rained all morning and on the way to the place we got married. By the time we arrived it had stopped. Wet floors and sunny skies, gorgeous pics. I was worried so much but on the day I didn’t actually care.

It was pouring on my wedding day. We had a wet weather plan, and the pics in the beautiful drawing room at our venue were perfect. It was a brilliant wedding, the weather didn’t matter at all.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 08/05/2025 17:23

We got married in February and as well as being cold it poured down. We came from the wedding venue to our house where we were hosting the day into evening do and as the weather was so awful we couldn’t use the gazebos in the garden and everyone had to be hosted inside our house instead. And we had the best day of our lives. Every minute was fantastic and we would do exactly the same again. Weather played no part in making the day amazing. I married the most wonderful man and we had the most romantic day. It was magical.

Absolutely horrendous weather for our wedding day many years ago! Similar time of year heavy rain strong winds. All photos had to be taken inside.
Our wedding car broke down and we had a bomb scare at the venue ( 80s) Oh and the wedding car owner turned up at the Reception to try to claim the balance paid on the day. My Father law had claimed it back as the contract wasn’t fulfilled. We arrived at the Reception venue in his car.
We have been happily married for a very long time.

@Yorkiedoodle I'm also getting married on nearly the same day as you. Would have been lovely to have amazing weather and I'm still hoping it will at least have some sunny spells, but nothing can be done about it. But I think it is ok to feel a bit sad about it and at least we have best part of a week to get used to the idea.
I have been to some very hot weddings where everyone was uncomfortable, so there are always pros and cons.
But most people say the day flies by, so I just want to try and relax and enjoy it.
Hope all your preparation is going well and have an amazing time whatever the weather!

We had a very outdoorsy July wedding in a barn (DH's idea), and we had ceremony in a clearing next to it - due to it being a Jewish wedding, the license was with the rabbi rather than the venue so we could be more flexible. I insisted on having a marquee over the clearing as I thought the barn itself would be a bit too tight for the ceremony in the event of rain.

And thank God, because it was summer 2007 and basically there were floods all over the shop. The venue claimed they'd never had a day 'rained off', but it did rain the whole day before, although the forecast didn't look too bad the next day.

Just as the ceremony was due to start, and I was sitting in my dad's car, the heavens opened with torrential rain. I thought 'OK, it won't rain this hard for that long.'

But it kept going and I thought 'This isn't funny anymore'... then I saw everyone scurrying around with umbrellas and then I thought 'Sod it, it is funny actually'.

Just as we were ready to begin, it stopped, and it stayed dry albeit cloudy the rest of the day. The rabbi said that traditionally rain is thought of as very auspicious for Jewish weddings.

Honestly unless you've planned the whole thing to be outdoors (always unwise with a British wedding) the weather really won't matter. The rain actually made ours even more memorable I think.

Marianwallace · 15/05/2025 22:22

Didn't need them in the end but we bought a bunch of cheap huge white wedding brollies. Seen some great photos using them.

CarpetKnees · 18/05/2025 23:28

We had '4 seasons in a day' on our wedding day.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter, though obviously everyone prefers a dry day, there's nothing you can do about the weather so you just crack on.
As it turns out some of my favourite photos are us two sitting in the place we held our Reception with small groups of guests in each photo.

I was the photographer at a very rainy wedding. It had been planned as an outdoor ceremony and the whole thing was very quickly revised when a weather bomb came in. The wedding was lovely and the diffused light was amazing for photos. The thing that made it all possible was the brides attitude. She didn't mind getting wet at all, even in her glorious dress. Because she was so calm, so was everyone else. I got an amazing shot of her veil coming off her head in the rain and drifting off the end of a jetty - it was a bit surreal

Think large umbrellas, and gardens with a high roofed shelter such a sa rotunda - where the photos can be taken without the structure above being included.

And remember my old Mum's saying...

Lucky is the bride married on a rainy day.

The 21st was a beautiful day for your photos @Yorkiedoodle

Hope you had a fabulous day 💐

I had snow - lots of it. It made it a memorable wedding although sadly a few people weren't able to come. We did manage a couple of outside photos - curtailed when DM told me the guests (in their thick coats) were getting cold - not sure what she thought I was feeling in an off the shoulder dress.... Most of the photos were taken at the venue and looked lovely. There is a funny picture of a long line of green wellies in the church porch though.....

YellowPostIts · 23/05/2025 11:52

My parents famously truly terrible weather for their summer wedding.

They’ve been happily married for 55 years.

Enjoy your day whatever the weather

Echobelly · 23/05/2025 14:21

I did buy a lovely blue flowery umbrella (and some fun wellies) so we could use/have pics with those if it was really rainy, but wasn't needed in the end. Could be something to bear in mind if you want to be able to have a laugh/some funny photos in the event of rain because then it's something to look back on a smile about.

Poured rain on mine - we had arranged most guests going to pub across the road from church for hot whiskeys while family went to hotel for photos, they had mulled wine on arrival, we were mostly done by the time others got to hotel so got to mingle for most of the mulled wine bit. That was 25 years ago and we’re still married 😁🎉

ToadRage · 01/06/2025 15:14

We had rain before and after, luckily the sun came out just for the photos. Had to carry the skirt of my dress getting in and out of the car so it didn't get wet. Everyone said I was tempting fate having an April wedding.
