Wedding gift evening guest

Wedding in a couple of months, evening guest. Not seen couple for over a year, have tried but they bailed on the dates. Spouse can’t attend as has to stay at home with young child as we have no one to help. I’ll be going but driving, and not staying out long. Unsure what the standard amount is for a gift in evening. Help please :)

If you haven't seen them for over a year are you sure you even want to go ??

ToKittyornottoKitty · 03/05/2025 20:41

Maybe a bottle of champagne? Not sure what the relevance of you driving is, you sound like you don’t even want to go so maybe just don’t go

imstillstanding20 · 03/05/2025 20:41

Well I replied abit too quickly and can’t really back out. Would probably mean not seeing them again….what ch I don’t really want. However I do see your point.

@ToKittyornottoKittyits not super near us hence driving is easier. :)

I’m going to one for a colleague, they are getting £50 JL vouchers in a card! I know it’s pretty boring 😂

imstillstanding20 · 03/05/2025 20:43

@TheChosenTwoi was actually thinking JL!

No I meant in relation to what gift you get them 😅 nice Champagne should do it though, driving or not

KurtansCurtain · 03/05/2025 20:43

I’d do £20 in a card for them. If I was a day guest it would be £50. If they were close friends who didn’t continuously bail on me I’d be more generous.

imstillstanding20 · 03/05/2025 20:45

@ToKittyornottoKittyaah ok ha ha! I was clearly just waffling in general! 😂

@KurtansCurtainYes if it was full day I would spend a lot more, so looks like champs or a voucher so far.

Branded champagne but not a vintage is fine think circa £35-40

Coconutter24 · 03/05/2025 20:50

I wouldn’t go for champagne, we got loads when we married, I don’t drink the stuff so re gifted it all

imstillstanding20 · 03/05/2025 20:55

@Coconutter24they are big drinkers so I think it would be ok.

I attended colleagues evening do couple years ago. I was 8 wks post partum, husband away with work. I drove, showed face for a few hours, £30 in a card. Tbh our mat pay was crap and so this was all I could really afford. As a couple going to an evening do I’d probably do £50 and if we’re a couple attending all day we give £100.

imstillstanding20 · 16/05/2025 07:38

@strangerontheinterneti did the same at 5PP, think we all put in together and did £20 each for our colleague as we were all evening. I think I’ll get a bottle of something for them, nice time of year for a fizz.

Presumably, if you are going without your dh, then you are going as part of another group (colleagues or sports Team or friends who shared a house at Uni or something) ? In those situations I've generally contributed to a collection for them so there is a present / voucher / cash from the Team, rather than everyone giving individually.

CarpetKnees · 18/05/2025 23:24

I think, rather than receiving 20 bottles of champagne (or any other drink), most couples getting married would genuinely prefer a £20 note in a card.

If champagne is their thing, they can go out and buy some, but if it isn't, then they can put the cash to something they need / want, and remember that was 'from all our friends' from the wedding.

strangerontheinternet · 19/05/2025 00:12

Agree with this. If I was the bride and groom I’d prefer £10-30 in cash than a bottle of champagne.
