Wedding in 4 weeks, still need a cake

Just that really 😂

We’re having a registry office wedding followed by private area booked at a nice pub. My original plan was to have something like this delivered direct to the pub the day before

https://www.patisserie-valerie.co.uk/products/pink-ombre-rosette-cake

but the pub are saying they don’t have the fridge space to store it overnight.

I don’t really want to spend more than £150, but I do want a cake and I do want it to look a bit wedding-y. I’ve already bought a personalised Mr&Mrs cake topper.

I don’t want cupcakes or anything like that because I always imagined having that “cut the cake” moment. Although now I’m starting to wonder if it’s even worth all the stress for that little moment.

any suggestions? Xx

You can buy an actual wedding cake from Waitrose too, around four tiers but they are about £200 - £250.
So cheaper to buy the cakes singularly and stack yourself. X

The moh and bm picked up our cake, and brought to the resturant that day, before the ceremony.

nomeslice · 23/08/2024 05:03

I ordered a P Valerie cake for a birthday celebration in a pub. We had to travel to London the night before. Due to timings I had delivered 3 days early where it stayed in our freezer. When it was time to travel I then took it out of the freezer and put it in a cool box to defrost. The cool box stayed in the car overnight and we went to the pub for lunch the next day with the cake. It was absolutely fine. The cakes are delivered in a Styrofoam lined cardboard box with ice packs and dry ice packs.

M&S do huge Colin and Connie the Caterpillar cakes that serve 40 people for £50. Get one of each and put a little top hat on Colin and a little veil on Connie (I’m only half joking- I love a caterpillar cake).

DGPP · 23/08/2024 05:30

The M&S buttercream cakes are delicious and don’t need the fridge. They are ideal.

littleoldme3 · 23/08/2024 05:33

@TayceOnToast We ordered a PV cake for MILs 60th. Defrosted it exactly as the instructions said and it was awful! There were water droplets all over the icing making it patchy and it didn’t taste great at all. Personally, I would avoid. I’d be using M&S for sure 😊

zebranotzeebra · 23/08/2024 05:48

We had the M&S two tier cake at our wedding recently - the pack specifically says not to refrigerate! It does need a little bit of assembly to put the two tiers together but it's very straightforward. My MIL then did an amazing job decorating it with fruit and we had a topper that said Mr and Mrs Zebra which I got off Etsy

SheilaFentiman · 23/08/2024 05:52

I had m and s white iced fruitcakes ( rather than buttercream) and I bought a stand so the cakes weren’t stacked but sort of swooped out at different levels. Then the florist put flowers on top, though a topper will also be fine.

like this:

Achangearama · 23/08/2024 05:54

On a different note - it’s a pub - ask if they can put it in the cellar (they’re generally cool).

CanelliniBeans · 23/08/2024 05:59

I would get the M&S one and store at home. Or as someone said three plain white iced cakes of different sizes and put it together myself.
We recently had a PV cake for another celebration which the courier must have dropped because we had a message apologising that the cake was no longer in a deliverable state and we got a refund. But had no cake.

OhshutupNancy · 22/08/2024 13:36

This is the smaller M&S naked cake. Just bought a topper a pack of macaroons and it was good to go!

Love this! Looks great, thanks for sharing.

Where is the cake stand from?

Thanks everyone and especially thanks to those who dug up the small print about the Patisserie Valerie cakes! I couldn’t find that info anywhere!

I think we’re sold on the M&S cakes, feels appropriate as my partner notoriously loves M&S too 😂 (who doesnt?)

I’ll probably get it delivered to a responsible friends house the day before and ask them to take to the pub before the ceremony.

I can't recommend Sponge highly enough. We've bought their cup cake cake, lettter box cakes, individual cakes etc - brilliant every time.

sangriaandsunshineplease · 23/08/2024 07:00

Whilst the PV cake needs to be defrosted in a fridge it seems, does that have to happen the night before it is to be cut?
If you're getting married on a Saturday, could you not defrost it overnight Thurs to Fri, deliver it to the pub on Fri and just ask them to keep it somewhere cool. Then, on the Saturday, it just needs to be put on the table or whatever.

Fromage42 · 23/08/2024 09:08

If you do consider a cheese wedding cake as per a previous suggestion, it really does need to go in the fridge…

I also had the two tier M&S cake for my wedding, topped with a topper I bought on etsy. It looked the part and was delicious, it was very popular.
We had vegan and gluten free guests so also ordered a small cake from cutter and squidge so everyone could have a slice of cake.

Flopsy145 · 23/08/2024 09:20

I had a dessert table at my wedding and it went down very well. Bowls and tier stands of nice cupcakes french fancies mini brownies strawberries etc, then a one of the nice posh supermarket cakes to cut if you wanted to like this. Have a look at Waitrose they have lots of "entertaining" cakes

I'm a baker. It'll be fine unrefidgerated overnight if it's only buttercream. I made my friends wedding cake recently and set it up at the venue the night before. As long as there isn't a heatwave and the room isn't like an oven it'll be totally fine.

jklrck · 23/08/2024 09:43

congrats , best of luck on your big day xx

Phase2 · 23/08/2024 14:25

@TayceOnToast you're welcome it's my go to for gifts or parties now. Had a party with all the little cakes still boxed in a tiered serving thing and it was really popular, had a small cake from them to cut. Send the cards often as they are so lovely and the cake is really nice.

Lucked · 23/08/2024 17:08

Patisserie Valerie cakes arrive frozen and it can take up to 10 hours for large cakes to defrost. I don’t think you need a fridge. Ask the venue to keep it in the packaging and unwrap it first thing in the morning

Notthatcatagain · 23/08/2024 17:42

I make lots of celebration cakes, never keep them in the fridge, buttercream or fondant both keep well for several days. The only thing that needs refrigerating is fresh cream. Ideally keep the cake in a cooling room out of direct sunlight so that the icing doesn't melt if its hot and once cut keep leftovers in an airtight box to stop the actual cake going dry but otherwise a decorated cake is pretty bomb proof

Dinosaurlover · 23/08/2024 17:53

Make sure you check the size before you order - I expect that PV one is a bit smaller than you'd expect. It says it serves 20 but a big standard Colin says it serves 10, and that would be tiny portions. Most shop bought birthday cakes say they feed between 14-20 but again are based on tiny slices.
