Where to get married ASAP?

For reasons I don't want to go into (not terminal illness!), we want to get married ASAP. Can't give notice at local office until September, let alone booking a venue (just want cheap registry office wedding). Any advice? I've googled and looks like Denmark or Gibraltar do quick weddings, has anyone done this? Or maybe in Scotland you can give 29 days notice by post so can be married within 30 days?

Try Gretna green.

You can go to other registry offices as well, it doesn't have to be your local one iirc.

Try other local offices but I don’t think you will find something with less than 30 days as you have to give legal notice. Other places may be able to do a wedding blessing sooner though? And then do the legal part later on?

Las Vegas

Defo Gretna or Vegas depending on budget and how far you want to go.

Gretna still needs 29 days notice. In England need to give notice in local area. Thanks though

Oh I was coming on to say we gave notice and married 17 days later at the register office. But that was 20 years ago and we got an appointment to give notice 2 days after I phoned.

You always have to give 3 weeks notice I think, banns, unless that's just for church?

Toothy321 · 14/07/2024 11:20

Well in some countries you don't, Gibraltar and Denmark eg. But just wondering if anyone had experience of getting married in one of these places and realistically how easy it is to do

We got married in Gibraltar. If you look on the Gibraltaran government website the information about getting married is on there.

It is fairly simple on paper,

However it's wedding season and the registrars are likely to be fully booked. Plus i have read the office is short staffed so getting answers can take time.

We used a wedding planner to help with the paperwork they know everyone and where to go etc. We got our date easily as it was a Monday in late September (27 September 2021)

There are quite a few Gibraltar pages on Facebook and people are generally very helpful.

Wishing you good luck and best wishes and hope you get married soon. If you want it to happen it will ❤️

would you be prepared to go through a church ceremony?

That's assuming you're not a s-s couple. And it's a bit more complicated if either of you is divorced. Also apparently nationality comes into it.

Anyway, it may be possible to get a common licence and marry in your parish church without the need to wait for banns

Common Licences | The Church of England

It’s unusual to require a Common Licence but this page explains the basic information about them if you’ve been advised that you need one.

Fastest is by licence in your parish church (who must marry those who live in the parish - it's one of the remaining things where church canon law touches secular law). Banns takes 3 weeks

Not possible for same sex couples, and if one of you is divorced it may or may not be possible

I got married in Gibraltar, we did plan a bit in advance but used an agency local in Gibraltar to organise all for us.

They were called Rock occasions or something like that. For us, it was part of a holiday in Spain, but they organised it to the extend we wanted it and all worked out fine.

We needed to sign something 24 hrs in advance to the wedding and married the next day, really was that simple.
