What do boys wear?

We are finally getting round to planning our wedding after 4 years of Covid, new babies, house moves and DIY disrupting things.

We now have 2 boys who will be 3 and 5 by the time we actually get married. I've realised I'm stumped on what young boys wear to weddings though.. I hate the whole smart trousers / waistcoat mini shirt look or full mini suits just make me cringe a bit. It might be great for some but its just really not my taste.

But I don't really know what else I might put them in, we might have a date in April next year so it's possibly cold but also possibly not.

Has anyone seen anything that might do a smart / casual / comfortable job for 2 very active boys who will probably be doing knee skids across the dancefloor later in the day?

Mine wore smart shorts, a short sleeve shirt and braces.

Linen trousers? So do definitely not want shirts? What about open neck shirts rather than stiff collars.

These are cute

Cream/buff coloured chinos, brown boat shoes/loafers, pale blue or white button down shirt. Maybe a tie if you need to make it a bit more formal for the ceremony.

DS wore similar to his cousins first communion and looked very smart.

PoppingTomorrow · 23/04/2024 10:25

Knickerbockers with stocking and shirt with a peter pan collar

Fireman Sam pyjamas

Surely if you don't like smart trousers and shirt and/or jacket and/or waistcoat you must have an idea of what you think is appropriate and not cringe.

FurryGiraffe · 23/04/2024 10:28

My DSs wore exactly what FirstFallopians describes to their uncle's wedding when they were 5 and 2. They looked smart but without being mini adults- and were nice and comfy.

I also don’t like formal wear on children, but each to their own. Our son wore shorts, a t-shirt and an open short sleeved casual shirt, and sandals. If April, then I’d put them in trousers, t-shirt and open long sleeved casual shirt with shoes or trainers.

@WaawaaB I love those pics, really sweet and not stuffy! I have been thinking along the lines of linen but hadn't seen a huge amount of options that didn't look like they would freeze on a cold day 😂

I like the idea of them being collarless, or some kind of mandarin collar might work on the bigger one.

I've not been to many weddings where the bride/groom already had kids that were bigger than babies so hadn't really thought very hard about what ours would wear.

I'd go for chinos and a shirt. April can be cold (it's been freezing this April!) so shorts or linen trousers wouldn't be warm enough I don't think.

NameChange30 · 23/04/2024 10:46

oh and comfortable shoes or smart trainers

CurlewKate · 23/04/2024 10:48

Chinos. Collarless shirt. Cardigan or linen type jacket.Converse. Best boy look ever.

You could add a layer underneath. Cream wooly tights or something and a thermal layer.

Whatstheword21 · 26/04/2024 17:43

Chinos and maybe a funky shirt? Depends on the theme I guess!

NancyJoan · 26/04/2024 17:47

tan chinos, blue or white shirt, round neck navy jumper if it’s cold, Converse.

Abbyant · 26/04/2024 17:55

Chinos and polo shirts?

Isthisthisreallife · 26/04/2024 17:57

Mine was August and the 5 year olds wore chino shorts with a shirt sleeved shirt and braces with a dickie bow.
older ones wore chino trousers, long sleeved shirts, with a dickie bow.

Exactly this.

I put my 18 month old last year in chino shorts( August wedding) with collarless shirt that had animals on it (next) and a pair of converse. I had chinos with me encase the weather wasn't good. Loads of boys were changed out of their.shirts by the time it got to dancing

My nephews recently wore these shorts and shirt

We just went to a wedding and my 2 under 5s wore a shirt and waistcoat on top but with joggers on the bottom half. Smart but not restrictive. Next have got some gorgeous shirts with things like dinosaurs or diggers on.
Edit forgot to add, you can also get tuxedo print T shirts which we might have done if the weather was warmer

KateM91 · 26/04/2024 22:14

Maybe chinos and grandad collar shirts ♥️

bumblebee3122 · 26/04/2024 23:48

We got married when DS was 9. He wore smart black jeans, converse, a short sleeved black shirt, a jumper (it was October) and a dicky bow made out of the same material as my dress (purple). He wore that for the ceremony and formal pics then took it off for the do after with his top button if his shirt undone.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 27/04/2024 10:24

Chinos and a nice button down shirt?

StressedOutButProudMama · 27/04/2024 11:23

What we did was go for comfy white polo shirt and black school trousers the type with reinforced knees (we had floor sliders too) with a dicky bow that matched the wedding colours. The reason we did this was because we had some sensory issues but the best part was the kids could then use the clothing for school uniform once the wedding was over and just keep the dicky bow for a memory, my sister their mum really appreciated it as money was a little tight for her and she was too proud to ask for help so doing it this way she felt it was their way of contributing to the wedding and they earned the uniform for school for doing so. They looked cute, but it was warm you may have to think about jackets if it's cold but ours was middle of summer.

My son was a pageboy at age 5, and wore navy chinos, pale blue open necked shirt, patterned sleeveless jumper and dark grey converse. He looked gorgeous 🩵

JaneFarrier · 29/04/2024 00:20

My son went to four weddings before he was five. The first he was a babe in arms, but:

Aged 1, summer wedding: very cute dungaree shorts in colour vaguely matching wedding colour scheme. This would have been fine for a toddler too. Older boy could have had plain coloured shorts and a short sleeved white shirt or nice polo. Had crawling race with the groom at one point down a corridor (groom wearing kilt). Outfit survived.

Aged two and a half, autumn wedding: we did the smart trousers and waistcoat thing, but also brought a smart cable knit cardigan in case it was chilly at the venue (it wasn't). I'd have been fine with him in chinos and the cardigan. He later wore it a lot through the winter. Also wore the outfit at Christmas.

Aged four, page boy: kilt outfit with Prince Charlie jacket and brogues, which we hired. Totally ridiculous, but adorable. We have a lot of pics of him with my brother (also kilted) looking like a mini-me. It was surprisingly not that expensive to hire and we didn't have to worry about buying something he'd never wear again, so I would at least look into if there are little boys' formal options to hire (and then forget the idea if you hate them all, obviously!) They will be pretty robust for this age group.

He didn't wreck any of these outfits.
