Humanist Wedding Ceremony

Please can someone help me understand this. My partner and I want to get married next year in a non-religious ceremony. I thought this had to be done by a Registrar, however I have since discovered Humanist Celebrants.
Is it therefore a choice on whether you would like a humanist celebrant or a registrar to hold the ceremony?

A marriage conducted by a celebrantb isn't legally binding, so you still have to have a legal one done by a registrar at some point, if you want to be legally married.

I believe that Humanist ceremonies are legally recognised in Scotland as long as it’s performed by a celebrant trained by the Humanist Society. Outwith Scotland, you’ll need to have a separate register office ceremony for the legal bit.

DP and I have opted for the latter: our celebrant has known DP for decades and is ordained to carry out marriage ceremonies which are legally valid in certain US states but not in Ireland, where we’re marrying, or England, where we live. So we’re doing the ceremony which actually means something to us performed in front of our friends and family on the Saturday, and then going just the two of us and two witnesses to the register office first thing on the Monday after.
