Went into a boutique today and just wanted to curl up on the spot. I find the pressure and the sales tactics so overwhelming! Is it not anyone else’s cup of tea and how do you handle it?

Hated it. We got engaged in December and married in June. A succession of wedding dress sales assistants sucked air over their teeth at the prospects of getting a dress in a mere 6 months.

A friend made mine in the end.. had a lot of fun over the weeks of fittings etc

I bought a £50 dress from eBay. I'm not a shopper at the best of times and knew I'd hate wedding dress shopping.

Oh my gosh, I feel the same and did the same.. Mine was£80 and I genuinely couldn't have been happier. Love my dress. I could have found a larger budget, so it wasn't about money but I just fell in love with it. Success and I've worn it since (it wasn't white)

I'm going against the grain, it can be such a lovely experience, you just need to find the right boutique. Saying that, if you want a high street dress, get one. Wed2Be is worth a visit as they don't charge for appointments, but it didn't feel right to me. I had a really awful dress shopping experience (what you describe, snooty patronising woman who just wanted a sale) and I ended up leaving with a sample dress. I bought it too soon to 'get it out the way' as I was also dreading dress shopping and just wanted something that would do.

But after a few months of wedding planning and researching via Instagram and Say Yes to the Dress I realised I could do better. As @Meeting says, the important thing is to research before you go. Don't just take a recommendation from a friend because they went somewhere and it suited them. It needs to suit you. I knew roughly what style of dress I wanted (something fitted with little embellishment) so found a couple of boutiques nearby that stocked these styles. Their social media presence was so calming and just more of a cool and chic vibe than the desperate OTT one I had been to at first (on my SIL's recommendation...). I had the best day shopping and absolutely loved the dress I wore on the day.

Possimpible, was that the Ocean Terminal branch of Wed2B, in Edinburgh? The assistant in there was incredibly rude to my younger DD and really upset her. Needless to say, DD didn’t buy anything and left to look elsewhere.

@Babdoc Oh no, sorry I phrased that in a confusing way. Wed2B (I went to the Glasgow one) was fine, the assistant was nice, but the dresses just weren't for me. You're very restricted too because you can only try on what they have in stock in your size, so I'd seen some gorgeous dresses online but they didn't have any in my size left in the UK! May as well name and shame since you're nearby-ish! It was a shop called June Brides in Glasgow - the woman who served me was the owner's mum and she was just awful. The type that blows smoke up your ass, then bitches about you when you leave. Probably if the daughter had served me I'd have had a better experience.

I will pass that on to DD - I know she has looked in Glasgow too, although she lives in Edinburgh. Good to be warned of another snotty saleswoman! Some of them are really up themselves - I remember years ago, shopping for a prom dress for DD, being turned away from an Edinburgh shop because we hadn’t “made an appointment”!
