What did you do with your wedding dress?

I recently got married and I'm just trying to decide what to do with my wedding dress now. I thought about selling it on though unsure how easy that would be as I'm only 5'1 so, might be a niche market for it! I looked at getting it cleaned and boxed which is around £175/200.
Just wondered what other people ended up doing with theirs and if there are any other options I'm missing?

I donated mine to Cherished Gowns www.cherishedgowns.org.uk

An incredible charity who have a team of seamstresses who turn donated gowns into beautiful clothing for babies who were born sleeping.

I was sent a picture of what was made from mine.

There is a charity that takes wedding dresses and makes them into gowns for baby funerals. Very sad but very beautiful.

NormalNans · 03/12/2022 22:07

DSD wore it when she got married, it’s now in her wardrobe instead of mine!

caringcarer · 03/12/2022 22:14

Had it dry cleaned and hung in large zipped up cover. Hung in back of wardrobe. I wanted to sell it but DH looked horrified so I left it. My own only DD did not want to use it. It was expensive and very beautiful.

Both of them (!) are up in the loft, dirty as the time I last wore them, I wasn't about to pay another £300 to have it cleaned. I'm just keeping it for the memories.

fedupofthiscoldffs · 03/12/2022 22:26

Sold mine. No point keeping them hanging about

Blendandmix · 03/12/2022 22:29

Cleaned and boxed mine- hated paying for it (£250) it's on top of the wardrobe now

Mamaneedsadrink · 03/12/2022 22:34

Sits at the top of the wardrobe, hoping a niece may wear in the future. I don't think I could sell it, but looking back I'm horrified at how much I spent on it so would be nice to recoup some costs.

That's lovely

I gave it to the St Luke’s charity shop.
It was expensive. I don’t mind if they sell it for £50 or whatever. It won’t ever fit me again 😬
They have a massive rail of wedding and bridesmaids dresses in my local. Had I known that before I would have bought one from there in the first place!

Runningincircles · 03/12/2022 22:50

My first marriage failed. I sent that dress to a charity shop.
My second wedding dress, was dyed turquoise and I wore it with a tinfoil crown to be a princess at our family new year party, when my children were babies/toddlers. The guest list was immediate family only. Attendees were a witch, superman, a ninja, a princess a cowboy!

Bedbouncer · 03/12/2022 23:09

The first I lent to my then best friend for her wedding. She refused to return it and the friendship ended as a result. The marriage ended a few years later for unrelated reasons. The second is in my wardrobe. I keep thinking about getting it shortened and wearing it again. It's a lovely dress, but it's been there more than 15 years now.

Hung in the wardrobe for years after I got married in the hopes it would be turned into a christening gown. That never happened due to infertility at the time. It went in the tip after we split up. It wasn't until I met my now OH and we lost 5 Babies, that I heard of charities that turn them into little funeral outfits. If I'd known that at the time I would've had mine professionally cleaned and donated it to one of those charities instead.

I washed mine in the washing machine! Large capacity machine, inside a duvet cover, synthetics cycle, hung to dry in the garden on a sunny day. It’s an a-line made entirely from heavy lace, but 100% polyester and without beading. I was pleased at how clean it came out. Bit of a risk but it survived.

Probably going to box it and save it in case DD wants to make something from it one day. It’s been through two weddings with me (same man! Pandemic bride!) so I’m pretty attached to it now. Is it worth paying £60 for a proper box?

mumto2teenagers · 05/12/2022 14:20

My advice would be to sell it while it is still modern enough to sell. I kept mine in the loft for 20 years and eventually just binned it.

FettleOfKish · 05/12/2022 14:21

Mines in the top of wardrobe while I decide what to do with it. We got married in June. I didn't love it in the 'oh god I just want to put it on again from time to time' way, but also I'm not quite ready to part with it (and the original design was altered at my request, so not so how much of a market there'd be anyway).

My previous wedding dress went to a charity that make blankets and gowns for babies born too small to survive.

I may, in time, see if a cleaver seamstress could rework it (and maybe dye it) into something I can wear again, or failing that some kind of keepsake soft furnishing.

They create funeral gowns for babies who have passed away.

piscofrisco · 06/10/2023 09:29

The first one I chucked in the skip when we moved house. It had been in the attic for 16 years and was stained anyway from where exh's work colleague spilled red wine down it during the reception. The second one was something I might be able to wear again given the right specific circumstances (which would be a very posh winter wedding I would think so very unlikely to happen 😂) so it's the wardrobe in a bag. I might sell it as it would suit a winter registry office bride (which is what I was)
