Talk to me about illusion necklines

Haven’t actually started trying on dresses yet but have been looking a lot online. Seems like illusion necklinesI’m are very much the Thing for early 2020s brides much like coloured sashes in the 2010s and puff sleeves in the 80s.

Personally I think they look okay when it is covering up a very deep V but recently I have seen some that cover up the whole upper torso area. This makes it look like a really heavy dress is being held up by an incredibly flimsy piece of fabric.

Does it not feel really heavy or irritating? I’m trying to work out why they don’t make the dresses with a bit more structure.

When I went dress shopping I told the woman that I was totally open minded...except I definitely didn't want an illusion neckline.

They seem to feature quite regularly on plus size dresses. Sleeveless with illusion neckline which creates a very square silhouette...not exactly flattering on bigger women like me!

Not sure what it is so had to google.

Is it like sheer lace that goes over the shoulders holding the dress up, that from a distance looks like it's not there and the dress is strapless

If so, from what I can see they look quite nice. Lots of variation, some nicer than others.

I think it can look really nice on some people. I didn't actually try on any illusion necklines so can't comment on comfort. Why don't you go and try some on? Speaking to someone who works in a (good) bridal boutique will answer all your questions. One thing I did notice when I was looking was that some of the dresses that looked flimsy up top were actually bridal separates, i.e. a top and a skirt.

I don't really think illusion necklines are 'the thing' though, I think asymmetrical and square necklines are much more on trend. Lots of people wearing the deep Vs still. If you don't like the illusion necklines there are plenty of alternative styles out there.

I’ve ordered a dress with an illusion neckline. It was very comfortable and felt secure and not heavy. I am plus size and the neckline is a deep plunge which I wouldn’t felt secure in without the illusion neckline But it’s very flattering on me and goes with my city low key wedding
