Barn wedding food ideas?

SummerWedding24 · 18/08/2022 12:17

We are looking at hiring a barn (June) for our reception after a 3pm ceremony. Around 130 guests. But we are unsure what food to do? We looked at a drink and canape reception but would prefer something less formal? And the venue suggested a bbq for the main food. If anyone had any other ideas or could share what they did that would be great :) thank you.

I think that both of these sound perfect Wink

Could you have a couple of local food trucks?

Beamur · 18/08/2022 12:24

I went to a nice informal wedding recently that had a cold buffet and a pizza oven, with people making pizza to order. A BBQ or hog roast would fit a barn vibe. Just don't forget the vegetarians.

LOVE a wedding bbq. If you can get them to do something a bit more interesting than burgers and sausages then it’s even better. The most recent wedding I went to had slow cooked lamb shoulders finished on the bbq served with flatbreads, hummus & baba ganoush it was divine! Some good veggie options and you’re sorted.

Id go for hogroast in that setting (awaits vegan and vegetarian outcry)

Rather than doing that what would you suggest for the vegan and vegetarian guests?

mumonthehill · 18/08/2022 12:31

Hog roast/ bbq would be ideal. However often these do not give much food so make sure you have lots of salad and bread and decent veggie options. Also have canapés on arrival. A cheese wedding cake would be good addition with loads of crackers.

I went to one with posh sausages and mash - went down very well!

Ploughman's and hog roast.

We had a hog roast, it was lovely

Hopeful16 · 18/08/2022 12:34

We had a curry at ours. Friends had afternoon tea. Other friends had paella and a third set of friends had sausage and mash. All really good.

Well its up to op what she would like to do.

Me personally would just be a hogroast, stuffing, bread, apple sauce, bit of salad and corn on the cob. I don't think I actually know any vegans or vegetarians so it would not factor into my plans.

happyharpy78 · 18/08/2022 12:35

Pie and Mash went down well, enough choice for veggie, vegan and gluten-free too

Badger1970 · 18/08/2022 12:41

BBQ's are great - sausages, burgers, chicken, fish and veggie skewers. All served with pittas/rolls/plentiful salads. Just make sure it's not boring.

For those saying hog roasts, it needs to be located well away from the guests. The smell is horrible, and I doubt many guests would be honest enough to say it to you!

Wedding BBQ or a hog roast tent sound lovely. I went to a barn wedding recently and they had hired a pizza oven stall and a burger/ hot dog van and we queued for what we fancied and ate informally, then had an ice cream truck come too before in the evening any leftovers were put onto tables and we all smacked if you like. Was really quite lovely and suited the couple well.

bodie1890 · 07/09/2022 06:44

We had a grill - a couple of types of meat, halloumi skewers and another veggie option. Staff came round and served these to each person, and in the middle of each table were big bowls of salads, potatoes, sauces, breads etc.

It went down very well and was delicious. Lots of choice so everyone found something they liked.

Verbena87 · 07/09/2022 06:47

We did a hog roast. They also brought a yummy vegan option. We also made bits and had friends and family bring bits to share, salads, bread, dips, massive glorious cheeseboard etc for in the evening.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 07/09/2022 06:52

Maybe giant pots of something like Moroccan lamb tagine or a curry then you could offer veggie/vegan alternatives, a giant pot of rice ( if you had curry) & maybe appropriate bread eg flatbreads or naans.

gogohmm · 07/09/2022 06:55

Hog roast or Caribbean style bbq? Then a substantial buffet to cater for dietary restrictions

ODFOx · 07/09/2022 07:09

We had a caterer that offered different street foods so during the day they did a stall of paellas and one of pulled pork rolls. Later they did ploughman's suppers and wood fired pizzas.
Meanwhile we had a table of traybakes and cookies directly after the ceremony, an ice cream van mid afternoon, and a pick and mix bar in the evening.
It was a free bar so I bought boxes and boxes of crisps so people could just help themselves.
There were no fixed mealtimes so very much a festival or fete atmosphere after the ceremony, which worked well for a barn.

Largethighsbadeyes · 07/09/2022 20:57

Wood fired pizzas sound great!

All I would say is with 130 guests you may need a few different food trucks or equivalent or you'll have people queueing up for an hour and missing all the fun!

VenusStarr · 07/09/2022 21:05

We had a barn wedding. We had a canapé drinks reception and then a bbq mixed grill for the main meal. I was so high on adrenalin I barely ate anything. But everyone told me it was amazing 😋
