Hi everyone,

Not sure I'm asking in the right place given you're all planning gorgeous occasions and I have no intention of, but... I've recently told my partner I'd like to get married to protect us both legally and also the kids. He's actually happy to do it, just doesn't want the fuss or expense which is also fine with me. I'm approaching 40 and would hate to be centre of attention and don't have enough friends for a conventional wedding. Honestly, if we could just go to Vegas in our jeans I'd do that. Can anyone tell me about their low (no) key weddings please?

@bbqhulahoop we really enjoyed the day- no stress from dealing with guests, and it was still a tiny bit fancy in a low budget way, but to be honest you really don't need any frills at all. We saw some people rock up to the registry office in just their normal clothes. They still seemed so happy, and they were still fully married!

the term i've heard for low key small weddings is "micro wedding".
if you check you tube and google you will get lots of examples of low key ideas.
consider getting a couple decent photographs of the event for those unable to attend.

These are all amazing! Thanks so much! To the first respondent, I don't want to get married in Vegas, just get it done with no fuss really! I have a bad feeling we'd have to invite my parents and his parent and sister (his mum is dead and she has stepped into the MIL role!) But then I think if his sibling is there I need to invite mine. Brother has a wife and 4 kids. Sis will want to bring her boyfriend that I've never met. Just feels like such a minefield already, hence just wanting to get it done and just be married!

We didn't invite anyone except our parents (and that was mainly because we needed someone to hold the kids and be witnesses).

No siblings or other guests. No ring/proposal/dress/car/photos/flowers/music. No announcements. No name changes.

We went to local registry office, it took 30 min, then to the Italian restaurant over the road for a quick lunch, then everyone went back home or to work.

I got married in vegas! It's an excellent way to keep people a decent distance away!

you can just not mention it to them...

No shit.

No shit.

Just seems a weirdly expensive and hugely complicated way of doing something supposedly 'low key'.

They won’t be gutted if they don’t know you’re married though, will they?

Our registry office has a room that's £50 - it's only available Mon and Tues and only four witnesses/guests are allowed. The next one up was more like £400 I think! So we got married in front of both sets of parents then went for dinner afterwards with some other relatives, and some drinks in a pub with friends.

I wore a dress I'd had for years and DH wore a hoody. I did have flowers but my sister had picked them for me from the garden.

It was perfect for us (and as his dad gave us £500 we actually made a profit on the day 😅)

I was also proposed to in Wetherspoons and my ring was £15 from the Cash Converters next door, bought immediately afterwards. We're so classy haha
